WL: 1988 V10 Suburban

Yeah draggin up old threads. . .

So how did you get you new motor running? Are you using the stock computer, and a factory TBI? I have heard that you cannot do very many mods to a TBI motor without getting a custom chip. . . . but I could be wrong. I have a '90 sub that I would love to get a little more power out of.

It's crazy that you bumped this today. I just got it running this afternoon. I put the trickle charger on it Monday morning. It had been sitting since this spring.

The new motor runs, although it wasn't running good today. I found the #3 spark plug wire grounded out to the header primary tube. I just cut it off where it burned through, and shortened the wire. I am not sure what else is all wrong with it.

I would like to find a 454 throttle body, and do a few mods to the TBI set up, and then take it to The Shop Inc. in Lincoln. They said they could dyno tune it, and burn a chip for me. That would be the best route to go.

The current engine consists of:

1990 IROC-Z 350 shortblock
Speed Pro forged flat top pistons
1995 Camaro Z28 LT1 camshaft
OEM roller lifters
Speedway brand self aligning 1.5 roller rockers
Vortec heads (the lesser casting)
GMPP Vortec TBI intake
No EGR
No AIR pump
Flowtech (I believe, Craigslist specials) cheapo headers
2.5" dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers

That being said, I drove this thing for a few years with the current engine engine with a bigger cam (GMPP LT4 Hot Cam), and worse heads (ported 1993 TBI heads) with the factory computer and it ran (mostly) fine. The IAC would get confused a lot. The first year or so was with the factory TH700R4. When that blew up, I swapped in an SM465, and I didn't change anything with the computer. Drove it that way for another year or more.

Here is where is sat all summer.

I blew one of my 35x12.50x16.5" BFG Mud Terrains, so I mounted a set of gimme 37x12.50x16.5" Hummer take offs. They didn't fit. So I bought a 1" body lift from ORD and a new set of body mounts from LMC. I started installing it this past spring, and just finished it today. Record time I'm sure.

Here are a couple of crappy pics of when I started installing the body lift.

I finished the body lift install today. I just took a couple of crappy pics in the dark shop. I'll have to get some better ones.

Looks good!:thumb:

so you now have zero rates and a 1" BL and 37s on stock steelies???

I really like the stance, might have to copy that for my blazer. how does the stock 3 leaf pack in front ride?

Yeah it has a three pack of front springs with a 1" zero rate, and 2" lift blocks on the rear, along with the ORD 1" body lift (and brand new body mounts, they probably gave it an additional 1/2" of lift).

I think it rides fine. Doesn't feel any different than my stock height 1987 V10 long box. Just sits up higher.

Nice, I want to do a similar setup and use a 3 leaf front pack. Was just worried it would be too stiff. I have a 2 leaf front pack and its more like a boat ride, so a little bit firmer would be ok.

Did you have to trim the rad shroud with the 1" BL?

Yeah, I don't think it rides bad at all. They came factory in half tons fairly regularly. In fact I have found more three pack springs in half tons than I have in three quarter tons.

I didn't. I let the fan self clearance. It was annoying at first, but it took care of itself.

Read through this thread a couple different times. Nice to see it revived. I just wanted to say I really like the way you built this truck on a budget only using deals on stuff :waytogo: And just to make sure I understood correctly, the only lift this truck has is a 3 pack in the front with zero rates, 2" block lift in the back, and a 1" body lift?

nice looking rig man, i like that stance with the narrow wheels and low lift. though i have no idea how you guys deal with rust, i wouldnt even bother building 4x4s if i lived somewhere that had rust.

Thanks, and yes, that is correct about the lift.
