Wonder why trails get closed???

Interesting, BTW I wasn't tryingh to throw you under the bus just wanted to hear both sides and looks like we educated some people on Trad lightly along the way...Thanks again!

Yeah I put a cummins 12 valve in it. I can post some pictures of it if you want to see it.

Dude I'd love it, that is exactly what I wanted to do! I have searched enough here and all types of other cummins swap forums. I have a CC short box too that I was looking at doing here in the coming months. always nice to have more info/pics. What tranny are you running? Thanks in advance

I have a dodge 518 with overdrive. I'll send you some pictures.

What is BLM?

Lets start with who the BLM is. BLM stands for Bureau of Land Management. They are of the federal agencies who is charged with administering the public land that is owned by the federal government. Another is the National Forest Service. This encompasses everything from recreation to resource development and every other type of activity that may take place on said land. To anyone east of Colorado, this may seem weird since public land is not a common word. Out west.....Utah as an example, there is more public land (state and federal) than there is private land.

These lands are a "resource" to the federal government and every so often each BLM field office (fo) has to go through a Resource Management Plan (RMP) to re-evaluate the way those said lands are bieing used. This includes grazing of live stock, extraction of minerals (natural gas, coal, uranium, etc.), recreation, wilderness and more. Most of the fo's in Utah have gone through these recently and there were several thousand miles of roads and trails that were closed. Much of this was through the efforts of Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA).

SUWA is very good at the game of litigation and has land managers scared to do anything. Therefore it is easier for them to close the land than to manage its use. If you would like to see what SUWA is all about, just do a little research on their website or look at the Redrock Wilderness bill. The ARRWA will essentially lock up 80% of Emery County and the San Rafael Swell.

So again I ask, who or what makes the area that this guy was driving in no use? Who or what makes straying from these trails illegal?

What makes this area no use is the fact that he was off the designated route. Under the new RMP's the BLM manages recreation under the philosophy that a trail is closed unless designated open. In the past it was the other way around.....open unless designated closed. Just because there is or was a road there does not mean it is open.

If it were not for active individuals, clubs and organizations like Blue Ribbon Coalition, Utah Shared Access Alliance , Utah 4 Wheel Drive Association many of our trails would be closed today.

I am Scott Moulding first off there was an old mining road leading down to the area the picture was taken so I wouldn't call that "blazin my own trail". If you've never been to 5 mile pass it is an old abandoned mining area so there are roads everywhere.

Thanks for posting up. The only point I can take with the above statement is that it is every users responsiblity to KNOW what is open. Don't rely on the BLM to have everything signed. Every user MUST operate under the new philosophy of the BLM.......Closed unless designated open. The only way you can be 100% sure something is open is to look at a map. Just because there was an old road there does not mean you can travel down it. You just may become SUWA's ammunition as to why they neeed to close down trails at 5 mile pass. Like I staed earlier, the BLM would rather lock out the problem than deal with it.

Just keep in mind, when you do something like this, it is a slap in the face of everyone who is out there fighting for your right to even travel on those trails. I hope to see you on a future trail project. The annual clean up at 5 mile pass in May would be a great one for you to be involved in.

Scott,

I realize that i might have been the one that was wrong but it didn't look like any "mining road" to me. And i appreciate you telling your side of the story and realize that there is always two sides to every story and if your is more accurate then mine... so be it. There's not a whole lot i can say about that. It wasn't my original intentions to throw you under the bus but it just ended up that way and i apologize for that.

I had a good time meeting you guys out there and don't mean any disrespect toward you or anyone else in your group. I know that i might have come off as an asshat posting this up and now realize that it was a mistake and should have been dealt with on the trail and not over the internet. And like alf444 said earlier we have all learned a little about tread lightly so maybe it was for the better.

Again Thanks and sorry Scott

Kyle.

I think this is the best way to look at unknown areas....things are just too touchy these days to even chance an unknown trail as to whether it is ok to use of not....err on the side of conservatism, if not it seems like someone has a camera on you, friend or foe.

I would just like to mirror everyone and say thanks to Scott for posting up, photos can certainly blow something out of proportion.

We need to quit bickering amongst ourselves about stupid stuff like this and just get the pens to papers and start writing letters.

If we all wrote a letter a week and I mean everyone, this would never had been a big deal.

I have been wheelin all over that area hundreds of times....There are roads EVERYWHERE. It would be real hard to tell whats open and whats not, especially when you see fresh tracks on all the roads.

Link dont work? What did I miss and what he do???

You didn't miss anything. The reason the link does not work is it was removed because the subject(a member in good standing was falsely accused of "Blazing his own trail"), when it really didn't happen.
