xj shafts

The one I have is splined on both ends. I think it was on a '99 Cherokee. It is worthless, does it work on older Chevys or can I make it work somehow?

Luke, I think that was my case as well. I ended up cutting the end off the stock shaft and welding it onto the XJ shaft on the column end. I do have a body lift too though, not sure if that would come into play or not.

Can you post a picture? I know the newer Cherokee's are funky looking and the GRAND Cherokee's (even the square body ones) are useless as well. Maybe just pulling the two halves apart and swapping it with the correct one will work. There is another 50% off weekend in a couple weeks, I'll see what I can find.

I broke the dust shield on mine is it going to be ok?

Dust shield? The plastic piece that snaps on where the shafts come together?

If so, yes. It's pointless and may have been used to keep something else from rubbing against it.
I may also be able to ship that door stuff here shortly. :waytogo:

As of today, everything is paid for. Zero left. Will update when I get more. :waytogo:

Here's something I PMed firemedicsafd about the XJ shaft and extending it.

As long as the steering box still accepted your stock steering shaft, it will work. The length is pretty long but I think the longer shaft should work. The problem with having to extend them is the lower plastic bushing that holds the two halves together tightly. If it comes out of the bottom when extending the two halves, you will end up with poor "interference" fit and a sloppy feel. If this happens, you will want to run a nut & set screw to take up the slack. Check out this post of mine.

The middle picture (in that ^^^ post) shows the plastic bushings or spacers. The longer XJ shaft is ONLY longer AFTER the first spacer. So both shafts (short or long) have the first spacer in the same location. You can see the difference in my for sale thread.

Soooooo if you extend both shafts, this first spacer will be visible at the same length. The longer XJ shaft will still have 1" more shaft inside the other. So, if both spacers are still inside you'll be fine. But if the bottom one comes out, you should run at least one nut&set screw at the bottom to take up any slop.

Here is a picture of mine.

You can see the nut&screw idea better. I only did this as an experiment. It's also easier to get on and off since I can collapse the shaft. It was not necessary as the shaft is actually inside the other MORE than when it was on the Jeep. I have roughly 4,000 very hard miles on this, though half of those are with hydro assist.

Here's the pics. Both ends are aluminum.

Yeah, I think that's a Grand Cherokee. I believe the first time they changed the shafts (regular XJ too) they went to a shorter design. Something like that, could be the other way around. Easiest way to tell is there is no collapsible rubber boot and the two halves should come together in the center of its total length. The shorter design one is considerably shorter and easy to spot.

That one, sir, is a paperweight. :(

Edit: Even if the XJ you're pulling one from is the right year, make sure it's not a GRAND Cherokee.

No, it wasn't a Grand, I pulled it myself and it was properly attached in the vehicle when I got to it. The rest of the Cherokees were all missing their steering shafts, so I had nothing to compare to and no other real options. It's fully collapsed in the picture.

Oh well, it was $5 and I can sell it on eBay. You can sell anything on there if you just put "Jeep" in the description.

Luke I think you got a ~96+ model year....did that one go through the firewall on the XJ?
When I was looking there were different designs on or about 95-96+ model years

Yes, it was a 1999. You can see the rubber boot that seals at the firewall. I probably just had sunstroke from searching through 3 dozen GM FWD cars for Buick parts.

OK, I did better today. This was the only pre-96 in the yard. You can see I found something else interesting.

OK, I'll stop hijacking your for sale thread now.

Hate to clutter you thread, but does anyone have a source for the plastic bushings in between the 2 halves of the shaft?

I tossed mine during install, to make it slide easier, but now i've got slop.

Comments? Have a trashed one you can steal the bushings from for me?
