‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

Thanks!
Right now I am working on my steering. I am thinking about hydro assist. I have been reading threads about it and I am ready to order some parts.
I have to do it on the cheap.

Cool vid!

I tend to keep my foot heavy on the gas even while breaking at the same time, while I am climbing up & over stuff.

I would really recommend a tranny temp guage and an extra large cooler. That is really hard on tranny's and generates an assload of heat very quickly.

I have huge diesel radiator with 2 big oil coolers. I use 1 for the tranny. I guess I could use the other one too but I was thinking I would use it for hydraulic assist steering.
There was an additional tranny cooler on there as well but I didn't like how it was hooked up it was sloppy work and I took it off when I replaced my radiator. I could always put it back on.
I need to do a lot of gauge work. I am having trouble with my oil pressure gauge, calibrate my speedo, temp gauge, no tach, etc...The only gauge that is correct is the clock!

deciding gear ratios

Let's talk gear ratios.
I want to change my R&P gears but I can't decide between 4.10 or 4.56. I plan to put a locker up front & want to change the gears while its open.
Right now I have stock gears 3.08:1. I am rolling on 35's. My engine is a 305 SB, tranny is 700R4.
I don't really drive it on the highway too much, just on the weekends sometimes I take the dogs down to the beach a few miles away.
I usually like to crawl through rocky canyons and speed through sandy washes and stuff like that. You can see in my pics the kind of stuff I do.
I am leaning towards the 4.56's but I wanted to hear your opinions about it.

On the high end-With the 4.56's on the highway does the RPM go way high or way low?

On the low end- I would expect a sick crawl ratio where I can just idle over boulders - nice!

Thanks guys. My GF wants my wish list for the JIMMY. It includes Locker, R&P's, hydro assist steering, new tires, winch, roll cage, trailer; you know just the basics.

4.56 or 4.88 Cause you 36's or 37's are in your future! Dont try and deny it. We have all said "Naw 35's are the max" :waytogo:

I went to 4.56's with my 37's and No Overdrive and it was great on the highway. I could run 65 just fine.

Now with my 40's I wish I would have just went 5.13's

I'm not denying that one day I will have a truggy on 1 tons with JIMMY skin welded to it on 40's.
The thing is -I'm not going to put tires bigger than 35" on these 10 bolts.
The decision has been made, its unanimous 4.56 it is.

Next I would like to ask for your opinions on my front bumper. I made this out of a piece of steel off the construction site a while ago. It works well for recovery and it also attaches to a towbar I made so I can flat tow if I need to.
I was thinking I need more protection for the lights. I had some scrap tubing laying around so I mocked up a sample.
Here it is:

The second idea was to take out the hoop in the center and run the tube on the right straight across and maybe drop a little tube between each light.
(sorry no pic of the second option)

I have 4:56's sitting in my garage and thats why Im pulling the axles this weekend! :waytogo: Doesnt your stinger need to be higher?

ms paint skillls:haha:
Thanks Chris. I don't have the paint skills.

Yea the idea is that it will align with the center line on the hood and lean forward to protect the lights. I want to be able to see it from the driver seat but not stick out too far.
This is just a mock up ; I was using scraps of material sitting in the garage and came up short. I also plan to make some sort of gas tank protection too. I have a ton of dents in it, I'm surprised it never leaked.

-My first multi -quote!- :haha:

I thought the idea of a stinger was to be as somewhat of a pivot point incase of roll over. Not as a "feeler" for the front of the truck. :dunno:

I don't think he's trying to make an actual stinger, just a hoop to protect his lights and grill from damage. I say just look around on this sight and find some bumpers you like and get an idea and go with it. Before you know it, people will be copying your design.

How did you do the multi-quote? I never have been able to figure that out. :dunno:

You are correct, I am thinking along the lines of light protection only. I got the design ideas from 2 rigs on off road magazine covers.

I have no idea how to multi-quote; its one of those things the guys never tell you.I did a lot of BACK and COPY and FORWARD and QUOTEWRAP and PASTE etc.

Really? I didn't know they were used for roll over pivot points. I always thought it was for assisting when climbing up onto stuff.
I think I learn something new on CK5 everyday.

To me, a true stinger is a tall hoop that sticks out from the front of the vehicle a good bit and comes up above the hoodline by about a foot and a half. It may help keep you from doing a slow rollover, but I think its main purpose is to keep your hood and engine from getting damaged as bad when you do go over.
