‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

I'm letting you know now. I could use the help. The parts will be here in a few days. Let's coordinate schedules.
I could help you get yours back together too if you need it.

Sounds good let me know when it's all here and figure something out. Did you order the master install kit?

No, I got the rookie install kit. it comes with shims and ink, no new bearings.

Package on my doorstep

I ran to the parts store real quick & picked up 5 heavy duty driveshaft U-joints. Look what was at my front door when I got home:

The brown Santa came through again with exactly what you asked for. And you didn't even have to sit on his lap. Isn't being an adult the best thing ever? :haha:

Status update.

I'm heading out to the garage to work on the rig. My goal today is to try to get the oil pressure gauge working. I actually fixed the temp gauge by installing a new sending unit and pulling out a rats nest of wires that went nowhere to discover the little green wire.

Q- I've asked this before but here goes again... Will an 60 psi sending unit work with an 80 psi oil pressure gauge?
My gauge reads +80psi always, I think the needle might be stuck.

I also have to check out my CB cable. You know; CB's don't work very well if only one person has one. That seems to be the case most of the time. Either mine or there's is broken and they never are both working at the same time. Oh, well. All I can do is get mine going again and maybe one day I will actually use it.

Oh yea, the CB question.- I posted this in the communications threads but there is usually only 1 person in there...
Do any of you use a 9'-0" cable with no issues? I was once told the cable needs to be at least 18'-0" to work properly.

No reply? Ok I figured out the CB problems but the oil pressure problems persist.

I went to the junk yard and got some replacement gauges. I replaced the oil pressure gauge, fixed the connection at the sending unit and now here is the symptoms:

When I turn the key on, the gauge resets to zero.

When I start the engine, the gauge goes all the way up to max pressure.
When I turn off the engine, the gauge stays at max.
Turn the key back on, the gauge resets to zero again.

Is this normal?

No, I put in a new sending unit. I did a search and found out that my sending unit is installed at the wrong location.

Right now it is behind the dizzy. It should be installed on the bottom of the block near the oil filter.
Apparently the dizzy location is for TBI type stuff. The lower block location is for older style gauges like mine.

Thanks.

Oil pressure and temp gauges I always use mechanical. Unless its a higher end autometer. To many variables, if you have a weak ground any were it can through the gauge off

That's where the sending unit is on mine. I know because I've let the wire get burned on the header a couple of times. :doah:

You are correct on those locations on a TBI truck, and what they are used for, but both are reading oil pressure. It doesn't matter where you put the sending unit, it will read the same.

I guess I don't know what you mean??? It doesn't matter what year is it is. Either of those locations will work to install a sending unit for an electric oil pressure gauge. From the factory on a 1987+ unit the sending unit under the distributor is used for the ECM, and the sending unit for the dash is located above the oil filter. If you wanted, you could switch both sending units and as long as you could get the wires to hook up to the correct sending units, everything would function just fine.

I think we agree that I should be using the sending unit location near the oil filter.

My rig was originally a diesel, the PO's swapped it out for a small block. So the gauges and wiring are still set up to hook up to the 6.2. Apparently the PO didn't care that the gauges didn't work.
I guess the 6.2 oil pressure gauge was under the dizzy, because that's where the little brown wire that hooks up to the sender is located.
There is no wire down by the oil filter. I was thinking I could extend the brown wire to hook up at the other location. :dunno:

I pulled out my gauge bezel and I can see the oil pressure gauge connects to a brown wire and a pink wire. I have no idea where the pink wire goes or comes from.

Now I'm rambling... I will try to work on it this afternoon.

Thanks for the input.:waytogo:
