‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

Thanks for the tips

This is what happens now:

When I hook up the brown wire to the sender on the top rear of the engine the gauge will reset to 0 when I turn on ignition power and max out when I start the engine.

When I unplug the brown wire from the sender the gauge maxes out as soon as I turn on ignition power.

Oil pressure and temp gauges I always use mechanical. Unless its a higher end autometer. To many variables, if you have a weak ground any were it can through the gauge off
I just want to stockers to work, it annoys me that it's the last one not working.
Yea.... I'd say a grounding issue.
It's always the ground! On the circuit on the back of the gauge bezel I can see all the gauges have a common ground and it's not damaged. The other 2 connections are a brown & a pink wire. I know where the brown wire goes, tomorrow, I'll track down pinky.

That's where the sending unit is on mine. I know because I've let the wire get burned on the header a couple of times. :doah:
Is it directly above the oil filter, about 2" up? There is a threaded hole there but the threads are a different size than the sender.

I guess I don't know what you mean??? It doesn't matter what year is it is. Either of those locations will work to install a sending unit for an electric oil pressure gauge. From the factory on a 1987+ unit the sending unit under the distributor is used for the ECM, and the sending unit for the dash is located above the oil filter. If you wanted, you could switch both sending units and as long as you could get the wires to hook up to the correct sending units, everything would function just fine.

I don't know what I'm talking about, I'm learning as I go on this one.
I voted for you this month Martin.:waytogo::pimp:

Thanks for the vote.

As for learning as you go, I understand. Which sending unit do you have? It should be a tapered canister looking thing, with a male spade connector sticking out of the top of it. They generally have a short male pipe thread piece screwed into the block, and then a 90 degree elbow on the other end of the pipe that the sensor screws into so it can point up.

I am not gonna lie, I couldn't find the wire for the oil gauge in my engine compartment after I swapped engines. The previous owner had gotten into the engine harness and some stuff was slightly cobbled. So when I installed the new (older....) gauge cluster, I just ran a new wire directly from the sensor, through the firewall, and splice it into the wire running into the 18 pin connector at the back of the cluster.

Interesting... I will try that.

I worked on it for a while today. With no luck. My 80-87 Chilton Manual says to use the one on the top/rear of the engine.

I went to the auto parts store and checked out a few different types of senders. There is a fat one that wont fit in said location, a double prong one with wider threads, and the one you are describing that fits perfectly.

I even pulled out the bezel and looked for pinky. It turns out piny has a black stripe and lives at #6 on 18 pin court. There are also several pinkys with black stripes in the 18 pin court complex. Search pretty much ended there.
I PM'd sweetK30 & he said to pull out a plug just above the oil filter and mount the sender there (like andyblack said). So I gave it a shot & stripped out the square on the plug.:doah:

SUM beach.

I threw it all back together cuz tomorrow morning Supermotard750 is helping me install my new gears!:woot:

whoa creepy i never saw that cuz that still haven't updated the sat. view my house isn't even built in the sat. veiw

Pink/Black is 12 volt + keyed. Look up my thread about installing the tach dash I put in. It should give you a decent idea of which wires you need to find.

Martin

Bummer about the threads stripping out. If I have time, I'll look to see what color my wire is and where it goes (although it's probably totally different than yours). I can't tell right now what color it is because it has oil all over it.

I'm sure I have the correct brown wire. The existing boot fit perfectly on the sender. The gauge reacts if I plug it in/ disconnect it. I can pull my bezel out in a quick 5 minutes now.

For my next trick I am going to run a new brown wire from the sender to the gauge & see what happens.

Meanwhile.. I'm rolling on 4.56's in the rear.
Friday we will install the front.:D:D

The guy who installed my Detroit Locker was a bad ass. He showed me how to do it and made it look simple. When he set the backlash just turned the yoke by hand and said this is good, any more or any less and you will have problems.
I never had any issues for about 3 years or so...

Sunday we were in Supermotards garage changing my gears, using a dial mic, torque wrench, shimming with tolerances of .005" and so on.
I kept saying, "this isn't how that guy did it." He was done in about an hour and only used an air impact.
It took us all day and when we were finally done, we ended up using the original shims!
We measured everything well, and I have been driving it.:waytogo:

On Friday we are going to do the front, and hit the trail Saturday. I hope it stops raining by then.

Awesome trail day

We installed the gears on Friday. I have a new name for the junkyard JIMMY. "LUCKY" because when we installed the new gears, we used the same shims. We triple checked our measurements and were baffled. There was talk of going to the casino.

Then, we hit the trail Saturday. Awesome! :D:D:waytogo:

Chickenrammit, and Supermotard met me at Corral Canyon OHV and we all had upgrades to test out.
We had no major breakdowns. Chicken popped a bead but that was fixed pretty quick.
I nearly rolled over coming down a hill but did a quick recovery. Don't worry, it was caught on film.

Coming soon...

so, how is the throttle response with the 4:56s?

Super sick! Driving on the trail and around town is bad ass!

The only thing that I don't like about it is highway driving. When I let off the gas at highway speed, I can hear the 208 complaining about it.
