‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

I broke my bench vise today. :eek1:

I was trying to use it to press out the axle shaft Ujoints when it split in 1/2 !

14 bolt front :eek1:

....pshhh!! don't forget to shave it.

I finished my junkyard 10 bolt rebuild. It includes

2 axle shafts
2 heavy duty Ujoints
Spot Welded the caps
2 inner seals
new brake pads
steering drag link
steering stabilizer
greased & painted everything

All the while I hear a familiar voice ringing in the back of my head saying "How many axles have you pulled at the junkyard and you still have 10 bolts?"

* I got to see where -a ck5 member- works at a top secret undisclosed possibly govment location. And they helped me remove the old rusty U joints that broke my vice.

Coolest shop ever! flagwaverThanks again.

Tire Hits pitman arm.

I've been driving around town and it runs straight. Steering wheel is back at 12:00 & it goes sort of straight down the road.

One thing.

I noticed that my tire is rubbing the pitman arm at full right turn.

Is there a fix for this? :dunno:

Crossover or change the back spacing its because your new shoes are wider

I plan on having high steer as soon as you finish your 13 bolt front build.

Back spacing on my rims? I can change that when I get 8 lugs.

...so There's nothing I can do about it for now ?

The old steering stabilizer was smashed so it wouldn't let me turn as far to the right. It worked as a nice stop.

Well, I already have a 2wd steering box and a flat top.:D

I guess I have more work to do.

What do I need now...:dunno:

2wd pitman arm

high steer arm for the flat top.

cross over drag link.

You got it sir. Unless you want the setup out my truck sooner

Regardless you'll still need the pitman arm and the 2wd box installed

Adjust the steering stops out which will reduce your turning radius a little or just don't hit the locks while turning right. :)

No problem

thanks Avery. I didn't see steering stops. I'll check it out when I get home from work.

Sometimes they work they way out or get removed and someone forgets to put them back in the knuckle. Also, is your tie rod end out of adjustment or does it have a lot of slop? Seems like I read that you just got some new ones but I can't remember.

Everything is tight & good.

Well, I won't lie... it's stock.

I have a XJ shaft, flat top, 2wd box on the shelf I think you've been around long enough to know what's going to happen soon... :D

I don't like to let parts sit for too long.

Driveline noises

On the way to work today I let go of the steering wheel on the highway. I went about 1/2 mile straight down the freeway before starting to veer towards the shoulder. I'm kewl w/ that. :woot:

But...

Since the gear swap I have been hearing those groans from the 208 when decelerating at highway speeds.

So I changed my tranny mounts & the noise went away for a while.

Now the noises are back. I looked at the tranny mounts & the one on the driver side is bent/ crushed.

That didn't last long. Has any of you had a similar issue?

I guess I need to switch to poly mounts.:dunno:

Whatcha think?

Maybe I overtightened it?

I was thinking maybe I can straighten it out & reinforce them w/ a bridge plate.

From what I've read, The engine mounts and tranny mounts need to be the same material weather it's poly or rubber.
