‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

You need to spray some desert camo on that JIMMY before TDS goes down next month. Now that I look at your pics, your paint job stands out like a sore thumb in the dez. Why don't you try a 3 color desert camo like the military used up until about 2010? That was good stuff. I think you should blend in with your environment. That would be cool. I painted my truck a flat black a couple of years back and it's almost invisible at night. I actually walked straight into the bed a few nights ago because I forgot I had parked it right outside the gate. One the other hand, you could seriously get lost or stranded out there if your truck looks too similar to the terrain. :dunno: What to do?

The Trimmy? I've got to see that. Is it going to have the front 14 bolt?

I was thinking about changing the camo pattern. That's why I keep posting random shots of California mountains for ideas.

The only reason I haven't changed it is each spot is a mark from trail damage which in a way is battle scars. The pattern evolves the more I use it. The body is pretty beat up now.

The TRIMMY. (By Supermotard750)

14 bolt? Well you could call it that, it used to have 14 bolts. :D

It's actually a 13 bolt (shaved 14BFF) front & rear.

When he gets the front done I get the dana44 spartan locker, high steer and move up to 3/4 ton fun.:woot:

Custom sticker club!!! :woot:

I have to give all the credit to MrK5 -Scott from Big horn graphics-

-As for the JIMMY

I noticed the rear sagging so I took some measurements. The rear driver side (at the wheel well) is about 2" lower than the passenger side.
It looks like the springs flattened out over the years.

If I pull a straight line from eye to eye the difference is about an inch.

I guess I am going to have to take the packs apart and add a few leaves.

I didn't want to do this until I get a 14 bolt but it looks like I need to go ahead and fix it.

I could use a little advise on which spring(s) I should add to my pack that would lift it up about 2" but still be flexible enough for my type of wheelin.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1360293545.228299.jpg

On the top is a stock leaf measuring in at an arc length of 42.5"

In the middle we have 32.75"

And on the bottom is an overload leaf measuring about 28.25" and 5/8" thick.

The top spring will fit in the pack symmetrically I'm sure I can use it. But I wonder how much lift I will get out of it.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Very nice version of your original plan!

I can think of a good number of recent:waytogo::woot: GMOTM rigs, proud to sport that banner!!

That top spring looks really arched. Are you talking about just adding it to your current pack or replacing the middle spring with that one? I dunno. It looks like it would give a lot more than 2" lift to me but it may not look like it in person. Why don't you get some stock 54s from the junkyard and get a 2.5" shackle flip from ORD? You don't have a shackle flip now do you? I can't remember. I just think a new (used) pair of spring packs is in order. To use the 54s instead of the 52s you have now, just flip the shackle hanger brackets side to side.

The sticker should be available to all GM of the month members. Just contact MrK5.

Thanks for the input AB.
The top spring is arched pretty good but is pretty flexible. Yes, I was talking about just adding it to the pack. There is a perfect spot for it.
My current spring pack was purchased by 4wheelparts as a 2 1/2" lift.
There are 7 springs in the pack. The top spring will fit in the #5 or #6 spot perfectly.
I want to get the DIY4X shackle flip. The only issue is $. I have to do this on the cheap.

Next season when I go 3/4 ton I will spend a few bucks on the shackle flip kit.

It just started raining too.

I might not be able to get er done today.

Here's a few pics to show the rear driver side sagging lower than the passenger side.

Ever thought about adding a zero rate or similar just to get you by for now? That wouldn't cost much and the extra inch should help you get closer to level. It would still cost you more than the leaf you already have. I was just thinking that as long as you have the springs off...

Do they have a swap meet type thing at TDS by any chance? That may be a good place to look for some stuff.

I considered the zero rates but I don't want "lift blocks".

TDS will have a bunch of vendors but everything is marked up 300%. There is no swap meet / cheap sale stuff.

Mostly Heep crap.

Just like the rest of the world. Oh well. This is the "Junkyard Jimmy" after all. Time to start adding in those leaves! Fun fun fun.

It's all good Jess, it was freezing out there. My tent had a layer of ice on it. it must have dropped to 20 degrees.

Don't get anything for me at the swap meet. I am broke right now.

Thanks

Today

I got tired of looking at my saggy rear end so I took off my springs. I wish I had a 14BFF to throw under there...

I'm going to take them apart and add a leaf in the pack. I might have to re-arch some of them.

The primer is the pack that is good, the red is the pack that needs work.

Wish me luck.

It didn't take very long to find the problem.

These springs are supposed to be identical.

The expert told me that they re-arch leaf springs by COLD FORGING them. I asked him how and he smiled and said with a hammer and anvil.

Now I am going to bang on these until they match, and add a leaf in the pack.

Here we go...
