Then my friends gave it a shot in this stock '80's toyota.

It didn't make it I had to pull them off twice.

Nice little stock truck...

Unfortunately that"s the last time this truck looked this nice.
A few minutes later one of the brothers ran it up this big black diamond wall and carved across the top and whipped it back down like a skateboard and drug the bed down the wall.

A few hours later the other brother decided to start drinking again and rolled it on it's side taking a poser shot in a wash.

...and then late Saturday night they decided to go out on a night run. they ran into some kind folks that were drinking that Fireball whisky and rolled it again this time upside down, crushed the roof.

The brother start fighting and one walks 4 miles back to camp in the dark.

The next morning we had to go search and rescue. Nobody was hurt. the yota is totaled.

Now we'll rebuild it to be a rock basher....

Please drink responsibly.

This is one of my favorite places to go. I don"t know how many times I've driven thru this arch now but I get a kick out of it every time.:D

Nothing too extreme around this area, just a bunch of washes and ruts to climb around in.

There are some trails and washes you can go fast maybe jump and do some crazy SBD type wheelin too.

Which I did a little of and I didn't bottom out this time. I'm glad I moved that ram mount. The front rides like a dream now. :waytogo:

Back to wrenchin'. I need to fix that front axle and I'm good to go.

I don't know what happened. That post was supposed to go after the failed video post a while back. Something wongggg.

Yeah, I laugh at people who try to tell me a Dana 44 is better than a GM ten bolt.

Now isn't it true that a D44 can turn sharper than a 10 bolt? That would be enough for me to swap if I had to get another half ton front axle. Or at least swap the knuckles.

No, that's not true at all. The 10 bolt and the 44 are pretty much the same from the outer C to the hub.
They have exactly the same turning radius, same Splicer U joints, same outer axle shafts. The only difference is the inner axle and diff.

I think I'll try welding the caps again. The U joint didn't break, the caps popped off.

Yea buddy!

My pump broke and I couldn't air up. Oh well, you don't have to air up to ride the Big Tex.

Flat towing really messed up my toe-in too. I don't know how but last time it was 1 1/4" out. :doah:

Now I can go up to Hammers and maybe Moab. It it totally a much more comfortable feeling.

Insanity

I pulled out my previous busted axles to CSI the carnage to show my weak points of the front assembly.

Quickly the definition of insanity comes to mind. Trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

These are my axles from the 10 bolts.

From left to right respectively.

1- I welded the caps on the junkyard U joints. It broke inside the locker.

2- I welded the outer caps on the junkyard U joints only. The non welded side caps broke and mangled the yoke.

3-I welded all 4 caps. Snapped the shaft at the locker again.

4- pressed in new Heavy Duty U joints. Lightly spot welded the caps. The U joint grenades and explodes. Killed 3 people and a dog.

5- pressed in brand new Heavy Duty U joints. No welds. The U joint breaks at the cap and takes out a yoke ear.

6- my spare Dana 44 shaft, passenger side. Unbroken.

Comparing the 44 shaft to the 10 bolt shaft.

The diameter of the 10 bolt is about 1 1/8" and it's 28 spline.
The Dana 44 shaft is about 1 1/4" at the end and has 30 splines.

Same U joints

The outer shafts are exactly the same, same spline count, same length.

Lets break this down...

None of the welded old junkyard U joints broke, only the new ones. New U joints suck!

Since the shaft on the 44 is 1/8" beefier , it should be indestructible!

I figure I'll get some junkyard 44 shafts and weld the caps. If that fails I'll have to get a 60.

Sorry to hear about the people and the dog. I know they made some rear 10 bolts with 30 spline shafts but I wasn't aware of any 30 spline front shafts of any kind stock. Or is that only on the 8 lug versions? If you run them, you'll have to have a new locker anyway right? I say run them with no locker and when you break them, it's time to find a D60 to go with your 14 bff.

No mang, I am already running a Dana 44 with a Spartan locker and 30 spline shafts.

I have a spare Pass side shaft, I just need to go get the driver side shaft.

I was comparing the pro's & cons of welded caps vs non welded caps etc..

Good break down.

I did 30 splines and new u joints and a no slip, no welded caps. Shoulda done the full circle clip mod but I got lazy.

I was impressed with how you ground the diff out to fit that carrier in.
I always wondered if that could be done. :waytogo:

Thanks man. I really shoulda had nate bring it to work and get it perfect on a mill, but I wanted it done lol.

Carnage

Started to replace the shafts today and noticed the yokes took out my upper ball joints. :eek1:

I figure if one is broke, they all get replaced.

The part guy asked if I wanted the $12 Chinese ones or the $40 Made in the USA ones.

I ordered new MOOG Ball joints. flagusa

Here's the busted up shaft next to the replacement shaft.

I welded the U joint caps this time. Hopefully I don't snap the 30 spline shafts.

That's what I recommend. Just make sure the grease zerks don't hit the C. I had one do that and I couldn't put any more grease in it because it was deformed. I don't know if I had the wrong zerk or what but it was sticking down too far. Just something to keep in mind.
