‘82 GMC “Junkyard JIMMY” {Build bash Rebuild}

Haha, you're welcome.

Feel free to add your pictures and thoughts to my thread for the next guy.

If they are easy to find, how bout links to the threads that helped set this thing up?

It's on the BB15 list :D

Sweet. It will be interesting to see how your synthetic rope does vs. steel cable. I thought about getting rope on mine but I just haven't ever dealt with it at all and wasn't sure how it would do.

What winch is that? How heavy are they? I wanna do a go dune style tube bumper up front, but was considering maybe adding a small winch.

This is a Warn VR 10,000lb with synthetic line. The synthetic line is eleventy times lighter and won't kill you if it snaps. If the rope breaks it just drops.

I still haven't quite figured out how I'm going to mount it. I want to put it down low between the frame rails.

Winch mount discussion

I've always heard the best way to mount a heavy duty winch is feet forward. The Warn installation manual says otherwise:

Choose a mounting location that is suficently strong enough to withstand the loads you intend to winch. Only the mounting orientations shown are possible for safe winching operation. All others are improper and inappropriate.

There is only one mounting position shown:

Anyone care to share their thoughts on winch mounts?

Feet forward works best with the 8274 style winches. I think the VR10000 can be rotated to mount like that. I do think that would be the best way to mount it between the frame rails like you're wanting to do. I have mine just mounted flat with the bolts coming up from the bottom. Mine weighs about 95 lbs. with the steel cable. I would imagine you could rotate the mounts forward.

Man I feel like I missed everything!! I can't believe you have a winch..... Awesome. So I say mount it feet forward. Not only does it take all the stress off the mounting bolts sheer wise. But also make the winch accessible from the bottom for service and such, since you want the between the rails stealthy look. My A-bomb bumper center came with mounts for a warn 10k and it only has feet forward mounts.

yep, feet forward. My instructions mentioned both options but warned against using their supplied grade 5 hardware with feet down. In that position, they wanted me to buy grade 8. Whatever, my bumper is feet forward (which is best anyway) and I ditched the grade 5 hardware.

Look up how to clock the case. You might have to in order to access the free wheel/ lock lever. Just kinda depends on how it's mounted up.

Iirc you just remove some of the side bolts and rotate the assembly to get it feet forward.

I know jesse did it on his at one point. I rember him being confused and then after staring at it going "oh duh" and said it was really simple.

I'll look at mine today if I get a chance, but I think you just remove the bolts around the diameter of the clutch housing, rotate it to where you want it and put the bolts back in their new holes. I would imagine that you can also do the same with the motor housing if you need the battery cables in a different location.

It's actually easier to mount a winch in a feet-forward postion most of the time too. Not always.

I've always felt that the only thing JIMMY was missing was a winch. Now you'll be ready for anything. :pimp:

Oh one more thing... I don't know how long your sythethic rope is, but the 90' or 100' of cable on mine isn't as long as you would think in some situations. :doah: I still have to make sure there's an anchor pretty close by before I dive on in.

Right arm, thanks for the feedback.

I started school last week. Now I'm a full time student. I haven't had any time to do anything on the JIMMY.

I bought another cross member from ORD (2"x2"x.250).I plan to use it to replace my stock transmission cross member and build a belly skid plate.

I've been contemplating building it in 3 separate sections so I don't have to lift so much weight and improve serviceability. I haven't completely figured it out yet.

I want to finish that project before I start the winch. I don't want to have 1/2 finished projects sitting around.
