No offense to anyone, but I see a lot of incorrect information being thrown out:
1. Most S-10's did NOT have the 8.5" 10-bolt. The only ones I know for sure that had this axle were the ZR2 models.
2. The 8.6" 10-bolt has nothing to do with the axle spline count. GM switched to 30-spline shafts in the 10-bolts back in the late-80's, which is at least 10 years before they ever started using the 8.6" version.
8.5" 10-bolts in fullsize trucks did use 28-spline axles up until about '88-'89 (all "newer" style IFS trucks had the 30-spline, the K5's and Subs that retained the "older" body style did not completely switch over until '89...at least according the GM parts computer when I checked several years ago).
3. Some people do have the opinion that front D44's are stronger than front 10-bolts, but in my opinion there is no substantial strength difference between the two. Also, just about any upgrade you can buy for the D44 you can also buy for a 10-bolt.
not the 8.2" 10 bolt that came in my chevelle (67), total garbage, upgraded to a 12 bolt car, bigger pinion bearings then a 12 bolt truck.
