No, the Gov-Bomb was the factory locker that GM put in the 10-bolts. They also put a Gov-Lok in 14-bolts, but I hear it's a lot stronger. Not Detroit-strong, but stronger.

What about the new 8.6" 10-bolts? That's what a friend of mine has in his '07 Silverado.

They are the same as a 8.5'' but have 30 spline axles instead of 28 spline. They even use the same ring&pinion as the 8.5''.

Many car guys upgrade to the 8.6 carrier for the 30 spline axles but its debatable wether its stronger or not.

Make sure your spline count is the same as well. I got a 14 bolt out of a dually I will sell you but its up in TN at the moment! To bad its not closer to me coming home. I actually have a whole bunch of junk i need to sell.

No offense to anyone, but I see a lot of incorrect information being thrown out:

1. Most S-10's did NOT have the 8.5" 10-bolt. The only ones I know for sure that had this axle were the ZR2 models.

2. The 8.6" 10-bolt has nothing to do with the axle spline count. GM switched to 30-spline shafts in the 10-bolts back in the late-80's, which is at least 10 years before they ever started using the 8.6" version.

8.5" 10-bolts in fullsize trucks did use 28-spline axles up until about '88-'89 (all "newer" style IFS trucks had the 30-spline, the K5's and Subs that retained the "older" body style did not completely switch over until '89...at least according the GM parts computer when I checked several years ago).

3. Some people do have the opinion that front D44's are stronger than front 10-bolts, but in my opinion there is no substantial strength difference between the two. Also, just about any upgrade you can buy for the D44 you can also buy for a 10-bolt.

That only broke because it was a Gov Loc , I broke mine with a couple years on 31's and 32's .

I am loving the fact that people are upgrading to 14bff more and more now . I just came to realize that I have all kinds of cheap gear upgrades available for Chevelles as hand me downs cheaply , without expensive set up and new gear purchase . 8.5's handle well over 400 horsies in cars

not the 8.2" 10 bolt that came in my chevelle (67), total garbage, upgraded to a 12 bolt car, bigger pinion bearings then a 12 bolt truck.

Thanks for the clarifications, but I'm still curious, what's the deal with the 8.6" 10-bolt? Is it stronger then the 8.5" (even marginally)???

well see my dad used to race a home made rear engine dragster with a bad ass 454 and he powered 18"wide slicks on a 10 bolt rear and he never did anything but run it never tore nothin out. it had a minispool

I am going to pull an 8.5 from a wagon or something mid 70's , and use a 3.73 carrier and gearset I already have ....dirt cheap 10 bolt Chevelle :pimp:

Yes 8.5's are strong under cars, many guys run into the 10 sec range with them. I run high 11's with a stock 10 bolt for two years without a problem yet. I am upgrading this summer due to the addition of nitrous. I go by the same idea, cheap parts from the truck guys to put into my car diff.
