10b R&P change (tech)

Finished front pinion preload at 17-18 in. lbs, original was 12-15. This was with the seal, thats just the way things ended-up.
Tomorrow install the new rear pinion, orig. shim, new brg. Crank down the brgs. to take-out the slop and then start the carrier preload. Still have to reassemble the PowerTrax also.:D

First pic, pulling the carrier brg.
#2 pic, parts to recycle. Power Trax looks just fine after ~two years of ~200 miles a week.:D

After stoning the mate between ring gear and carrier. I'm showing the ring at halfway to show the difference.

OK, ring gear pressed, brgs pressed. Did a carrier preload drill, right now its at snug to where a little tapping on the shim gets it in.
At .015 BL, these are the markings. I'm studying these while I have lunch and then go chase errands.
Later.:D

Moved .010 from left to right to start closing on BL. Also added .003 to left to sneak up on carrier preload. Result is .009(XLNT) BL and preload could go just .002 or .003 more, ah .002.
Gotta change pinion depth so carrier comes out again and tme to change pinion shim.
Pretty obvious pinion is in too deep, so I'll lighten-up on pinion shim. This will also affect BL again.

Sounds like you got the hang of it. And you are correct about the pinion being too deep.
Smaller pinion shim, then adjust the carrier shims to set the BL and I bet you have a good pattern.

One more iteration at the most. Except, my brg separator just ruined my pinion brg. New brg and new tool coming-up.

Yeah but this is beside the fact, its still a POS tool. I probably could have done just as well with something from HF.
Otherwise, thanks for following along and pitching advice. I'll keep posting progress until I fininsh with all four on the ground with both D-shafts installed. And a test drive. Going back to the very beginning, I'm knocking down the ratio by 15%, with tire increase of 10%. Should be hot.:D

Picked-up a new separator from McMaster-Carr, they use quality stuff, right? Its from the same Manuf. This one is the next size up though, got the brg off. Used the tip from someone in Garage, beat on the halves to get a good choke under the brg before applying the axial load.
Original shim was .050 so I put in new ones at .035, just to get a reference point.
I'll set it up and take a mark, tomorrow.
Gotta start on my check list for BF06.:D

Oowee, close. Drive side(upper pattern) looks perfect, coast(lower) says on the shallow side of perfect. BL is .012.
It needs a little more carrier preload also, so I'm gonna add .005, or .003 to the left shim.

Why does the pattern look wierd on the bottom set of teeth in the top picture???

The pattern in the second pic looks good.

I wasn't satisfied with the print on those, not a careful paint job. So I repainted carefully. The drive side in pic 1 and the coast side in pic 2, are the prints to study.

BL .008 +-.0005. Pic #1 is for drive side, pic #2 is for coast.
Now I just have to strip it down again, clean, crush the sleeve, and close it all up.
Start gettin ready for BF06.
