1948 Ford F1 budget resto-mod build

That was kind of what I was thinking, flush with the trim ring or close to it. Either way, it's your build and I like it.

I'm thinking open wheeled on the chopped cab as well, if and when it ever gets built. Keep updating as progress continues.

Wish my cab was that solid though.

I'd do a Ford inline 6 and maybe a manual transmission but will probably go with an automatic....craigslisting already

Sweet, I never really noticed these trucks until I owned one but it seems there's a lot of them out there built or being built.
 
They take a back seat to the 53-56 ford f100. I think one of the reasons, which I am sure you have figured out is the cab is tiny. They got bigger starting in 53.

I like the exhaust.
 
Oh definitely, that's part of the reason why I don't much care for the 53-56 style, everyone and their brother has one, at least one family friend has one and there's another down the street from my house.

And yes the early 90's ford ranger two person bench seat fits perfectly in the cab, I think there'd be room for about a 6" wide console if you ran bucket seats. It's like jeep width.
 
So not really an update, but I picked up this older gas can in Gilroy last Thursday for $20 and I already had the mounting bracket from our old dirtbike trailer. This was factory equipment on these trucks, at least on some that I've seen, and the running boards already had the hole pattern drilled. Just need a strap. You can also see where the exhaust will exit through the fender.

Never heard of that being factory. That's just a run of the mill jerry can mount which was used from WWII and might even be still in use today. My 86 M1009 has the exact same mount in the back. I wouldn't doubt plenty of people started mounting these on just about anything after the war
 
I see, eh either way I like the way it looks on there and it could probably use the reserve 5 gallons since the fuel cell I'm using is only 15 gallons I believe, 20 at the most.
 
You could even go so far as to plumb the 5 gallon jerry can into the fuel cell. So that it acts as your fill point.
 
That would be cool but I don't think it's high enough above the fuel cell to properly feed into it, my plan was to have a locking flush mounted hatch, actually a square gas door off a junked '72 F250, in the wood bed above the filler neck. I'm able to reach it easily without dropping the tailgate.
 
Started getting the exhaust ran last night, it's about $200 in a couple universal Summit 2-1/4" kits and they give you all the hangers and clamps you'd ever need. I'm welding most of it except for maybe one or two slip sections to make it easier to install and remove.

All the bends are nice and smooth.

Mufflers will be some used Cherry Bombs my buddy gave me for free.

The tip sticks out a bit further on the driver side because the fender curves tighter ahead of the tip than the passenger side, but I'm fine with it. Also slightly different camera angle.

I have a few updates, started on the wiring, got a driveshaft, cut down an ammo box for my battery box, and tried my hand at some engine turning on the dash insert. The led's are for the turn and hi-beam indicator.
