1967 Chevy Malibu Sport Sedan - hardtop

I love 4 door hard tops. At bloomington gold one year I saw a 69 impala 4 door hardtop, Caprice hidden headlights, black on black with a 390hp 427. I still wish I could have bought it. So cool to cruise with kids or buddies and with a hitch, to pull race car or camper.
Seen this today.

I'm having to replace the radiator and wanted to get your thoughts on replacing the water pump at the same time. Could be original, no problems that I know of. But seems like a pretty cheap part do go ahead and do while I am there.

Am I just going to be opening another can of worms? Thanks for your thoughts.

Seems unusual. I suppose a 283 heavy casting head could fail.
I would be very tempted to flush the cooling system, your 1/2 way there anyway, put new water pump, t stay, and radiator. Oil change. Then run it.
Could be something really old or a contamination from some additive that po thought was going to fix everything.

I think I am going to do exactly what you said. Ordered what I didn't have and hopefully can get it done tomorrow.

If it sat for any length of time it can build condensation and foam like that.

I was thinking that pic was the bottom of the oil cap for some reason :doah:
Lol. Flush it and try I guess, but yeah, that kinda looks bad.

Put the new water pump on and it pushed the pulley into the other belt, just.barely. What are my options?

Let it clearance?
Put washers behind the bottom pulley?
Other recommendations?

Interesting. Isn't it normal for the belt to go around the crank pulley and the fan pulley for the power steering? But you can tell that outer groove in the fan pulley hasn't been used because of the paint in the groove.
What's the bottom pulley look like?

Something is not right, but I don't need to tell you that. Do the groves for the alt belt line up top and bottom ? if so moving either pulley is not the answer.
if the crank pulley grove is closer to the block then the water pump pulley, it is probably the new water pump. The pulley flange may not have been pressed on far enough.
the casting at the block might be just a bit taller.
need to compare the old pump to the new one. I try to do it every time, with old and new on the work bench. you might be able to compare with the new pump on the engine idk.
Check the rear grove alignment and let us know. I'll try to grab some pics of my 66 belt arrangement tomorrow

Can you shim it and do crank, fan, power steering on the front groove then do crank, fan, alt on the other? May need to adjust the alt forward to get it to line up.

So when I first compared I didn't think the depth would be different (it eyeballed similar) and only compared the over all size, but they are about 1/8" different in depth with the new pump sticking out 1/8" further at the flange where you attach the pully and the fan to the water pump.

It definitely seems like the flange was not pressed on there enough. I pulled the pump off to compare and it is further off the water pump housing than the original is. I've now ordered a Gates pump to be delivered to see how it compares, this was a AC Delco version. I'll put them on a table side by side to compare once I have all three.

Luckily in my haste last night, I didn't use any adhesive on the water pump gaskets :doah:so getting it off was a breeze.

And sorry for the inaccurate comment and photo on my part @cheavyk10 :

I am not sure if it's normal on this, or just not what I have. The alternator belt does go around fan and crank pulley on mine with the power steering belt going around only the crank.

Your belts appear correct to me. For driver side alt with Power steering.

Glad it was the new pump, and not something more serious like crank shaft end play.
If the mating surfaces are clean, smooth, you shouldn't need any glue. I use a little Gasgacinch to keep the gaskets in place while assembling.

I love Gasgacinch. My dad turned me on to it when I was just a wee lad.
