1968 C10 DD, project "New Tricks"

Also got my intake out of the engine bay and into my cowl. I still need to add a fender mount for the tubing near the filter and powder coat the tubing so it looks nice. I have not yet covered my fresh air vent in the passenger footwell. The noise from the intake at WOT is FU**ING INSANE. In a bad way.

And I guess because of the intake change, I've got a new bog around 25mph, almost like a 2.5 shift before shifting into 3rd. Might need a re-tune I guess. Running the intake into the cowl was the best idea I could come up with and is completely reversible if it doesn't work out. I just don't know if I can cut a 4" hole in the core support to run it out that way. That's a tough one.

I seem to have lost my picture of my new bumpstops. But really, they are just bumpstops. My old ones were about 1.25" from the frame. I could see it lightly hits. The problem though is my front tires make contact with the inner fender well. I've got some pretty good rub marks. I don't need all that travel.

New bumps are about 3/8" from the frame :D. Seems to drive fine. I can feel the stops driving across water channels. They are abrupt :D. I will wait a little before I trim them. I might do 1/4" off. They are polyurethane instead of the original hard foam, so they compress less.

Can't wait to take it up the canyon again.

So I threw on my freshly powdercoated door panels and some new SS hardware. Also put some knock off Dynomat on the inside of the panels. Seems good. Got some new push on weatherstrip for both sides. So nice to drive.

Intake temps are good but trans temp hit 204 without doing anything. Im so confused about that. Also, the MAF is what is screwing up my steady cruise. Unplugged it and drives fine. So I need a tune with the new intake, I can't believe it changed it that much.

Check out new intake temp without the MAF lol

9.38 @ 74.97mph in the 1/8th mile
by comparison, my stock s10 went 10.55 @ 66mph
To compare further, the best newer v8 mustang I saw run the track did it in 9.5sec
I did 6 runs, all in about an hours time with some rest

1) didn't warm up the tires, lost grip immediately, let off, upshifted on it's own, got back into it, down shifted into 1st on it's own and I got squirrely, crossing the center strip LOL
2) warmed up tires some, still lost grip, chugged 2nd the rest of the way
3) warmed up tires real good, manually shifted the truck, ran good @ 9.53
4) Warmed up good, manually shifted and held the gear longer, ran @ 9.38
Parked truck to let cool, watched some of the cars closest to my time (when racing, it's a free-for-all, except stupid fast cars go separate)
5) Warmed, manually shifted a little sooner, ran 9.46
6) computer didn't print it out, but it was against a brand new crazy model Vette that couldn't keep the power to the ground, needs 1/4mile to shine, REALLY freight trains once it catches OMG

trans temp before cool down 214
driving home in cool weather 210 lol

no video as I was alone and couldn't put the camera on the outside of the truck (the only mount I had)

So I got my local welder to make this for me. He's done a lot of projects for me cause his prices are fair and work looks good. I brought the idea and cup holders, he made the rest. This will be powder coated black and bolted to the front of my buddy bucket. Should look killer. Better than the plastic aftermarket ones that never look right and would be out of place sitting on the seat. Total cost estimating the PC = $185. Pricey but exactly what I wanted. *final price $160

Just been driving it. I can tell it's got wheel bearing issues again that is also causing funny brake rubbing noise. This is the second time the wheel bearings are acting up. I'm sure the spindles a grooved from the last time and are probably much worse now. First set blued and caused problems, second brand are different and I thought they were fine but I think it's the spindles fault now. I hear brake rub while rolling, like it's a warped rotor. I also would like to change rotors, to solid ones without the fancy bits.

Just not looking forward to arguing with CPP again and trying to get a discount on new spindles. Really thinking about just getting a whole new front crossmember with brakes, rack/pinion, coil overs, etc. Then sell my current crossmember setup to recoup some money. Dunno. Between this issue and the trans getting warm, it's the only thing stopping me for taking the truck on a loooooong drive.

Looking good. Hope your front end issues clear up. This thing needs a road trip!

Yeah, I've been dying to drive up the coast and spend a few nights along the beach, maybe go up into Oregon and Washington.
I just can't be hitting any snow. No god damn snowy roads for this truck.

Another road trip has got to be along the southern states. I'll leave the northern states for warmer weather :doah::haha:

I used to run my 72 up and down the coast when I was stationed at ft Irwin out by Barstow. Was always a great time. I also had wheel bearing issues but I was running 35s on stock stuff. When I upgraded to 3/4 ton axles I havnt had any problems yet. The newer spindle from 78+ had a bigger outer bearing to hold the load better. Not sure on 2 wheel drives though. Might be an option just to get aftermarket spindles with heavier duty bearings.

The spindles are for the 73-87 2wd but I don't think the actual spindle is any different than the 72 stuff. The main advantage for running the newer set up is the ball joints. I have to say though, after working mostly on my 1 ton Blazer, these wheel bearings on the C10 are TINY. OMG. Like it makes me question running the larger rims LOL.

I don't want to spend the money on a new crossmember set up, not yet. But G dammit this set up is pissing me off. It's always something :(

Are you not worried about rainwater draining into the cowl while driving and then getting sucked into the intake? I was considering a similar idea but wasn't wanting to risk it.

The water from the cowl just runs past the tube on its way to the drain at the bottom of the cab. I cant really see it sucking in any more water than your standard cold air intake, like my stock Blazer has behind the grill. Also, considering they used to sell water injection systems and its still a small part of racing today, Im not worried. If I get a small mist coming off the filter, it'll be fine. I don't drive it much in the rain but so far its been ok. :dunno:

I guess it doesn't rain all that much (except for the past few weeks) and I remember some kind of diverter fin inside there to push water back to the rear as isnt drains, so maybe your right.

That intake is definitely hurting you. Going up and down in sizes and having a bunch of joints is no beuno. I also condone sticking it out the core support, or doing behind the grille ram air like I did on mine.

Damn, just replaced the MOOG outer TREs, yeah both! Sloppy sloppy. Only 2,800 miles!!

Also got my check in the mail from the stupid woman's insurance company, the lady that hit my truck. Luckily only the front bumper was damaged. Glad to have that done, now just gotta put the new bumper.

Also gotta pull this damn leaky radiator out. When I do that, I will also have access to the void between the condenser and radiator. It should house my new giant trans cooler just fine, tricky part is running the lines out.

Check wheel bearings, add Freon to AC, and take it for a long cruise. :)
