1968 c30 "Papa Smurf" prerunner build. links, beams, and turbo

With a prerunner, is it beneficial to move the tires up against the cab? Just trying to get the weight between the F/R? Or do they just tend to run them above or behind the rear axle?
Think of a teeter totter. the closer you are to the fulcrum you move up and down at a faster rate then if you are further away from the fulcrum with the same force applied. A lot of people get hung on centralizing mass. Example: cut out firewall and put motor in cab and throw a big fuel cell behind the cab. When actually having a good balance of weight farther from your fulcrum points(radius arm frame mounts, and trailing arm frame mounts) will help keep the body leveled through whoops and bumps and let the suspension do the work beneath it. So that is why you often see fuel cells and tires behind the rear axle to get the weight back.

Simpler explanation is.
When you air a truck the nose dives. You need weight further back to offset the nose weight.

While I haven't jumped a truck. I could put the. Nose of my class 1 car high or nose it in. All in how the throttle was applied leaving the ground.

Level in Whoops was adjusted with compression and rebound.

Your truck is badass.

Makes enough sense
Just different is all, from my K5 and street truck. More or less like my ATV, when I've got my toes on the pegs and my whole body rearward flying through the whoops.

That is some sweet tube work. Looks perfect in the pics. Is it going to be street legal so you can drive it in or is it going to be a trailer there rig?

Dammit dude. You pulled a fast one on me. I will admit thought, all the pictures you were posting I could not figure how that was going under the blazer.

You sir, are killing it with this one. Absolutely wicked!!!

It will be street leagal...enough. Glass is going back in it and all necessary lights will be on it. I will have it plated and insured as well so i can legally drive it on roads but i will still trailer it up to silver.

Yah it was hard to keep this a secret for so long but I wanted really good progress on it before i dropped it on you guys.

Thanks for all the interest guys. Keeps me motivated to keep building this thing to be as B.A. as it can be.

Doesn't turbo double as a booster rocket? right turbo=turbine=jet=flyfarther..

So does that mean, if your boosting it you are flying and in boost?? So many things... head hurts.

You, sir, are my hero...please tell me how long this has taken you so i don't feel like a massive degenerate...which i am sometimes. So how did you make that axle housing/truss? Do you have a cnc plasma table and a press brake for the bends on the steel plate?

I started working on this truck end of December 15'. So just over 2 months now. I have a lot of 3 day binge fab sessions and several all nighters with out sleep into it. At the same time however I don't work on it every single weekend. I have other things that occupy my time as well.

As far as tools all I have is a welder, tube bender(borrowed), portaband(borrowed), drill press(borrowed), harbor freight tube notcher, hand tools, and a grinder with cut off wheels and flap wheels. So everything you see was made with that. If your referring to the backbone truss that was bought from tabzone.com. The upper part of the truss and the link mounts was built by me.

I really like the looks of that truss......And the tube work.....And body style.

Whats the wheel base going to be?

Its going to depend on where all the beam and dual swing steer stuff comes in at but should be 118" stock for a short box c10 is 115"

Wow. Yep, thanks. I now feel like a complete degenerate. Lol. I'm guessing this is not your first rodeo? So you use an angle grinder with cut-off wheels to cut all your plate? Wow. #respect. I wish I had a shop where I could work all night. But lo- it should not be so. I live next to a family that says if I make noise and wake up their kids after 10PM they are calling the cops. :(.
How did you build the link mounts? Hole saws and angle grinder? How did you bend it?

No this is my first build of this caliper. Ive had trucks and always tinkered but my first rodeo with a back half, links, and a cage. Lots of research before i started. Came up with a basic game plan. And now just simply exicuting my game plan.

As far as the bending i did that with a 3lb hammer, a torch, anda piece of tube to match the radius too.

Don't always need the faniciest tools to build good stuff. Just good inginuity.

For reference I'm 300+ hours in and I have to stop at 9pm so that's weeknights 2-3 days a week and usually a full day on the weekend for at least a year.. And I have a full shop.. I can't imagine not having a bandsaw.. That by itself is a life saver.. That and an abrasive notcher..

And Nate didn't mention he's got access to laser cutting stuff so things he doesn't want to cut he doesn't have to..

Plasma cut stuff is a massive time saver..
