1968 c30 "Papa Smurf" prerunner build. links, beams, and turbo

Hung out with some friends with terracrew at the Jeep Invasion this weekend. Had a good time. This is the first time I’ve ever put the truck somewhere on display and it was cool to be able to talk to people about the truck. Cool experience I’m thankful for. Ran the dunes some, but the jeeps are insane and truly invaded the dunes.

I’m gonna take a few weeks off to get the truck good and prepped and also try to do some shock work before my buddy Jake “the Dirty Duner” shows up to Michigan to hang out for long travel weekend in July.

(Pictures posted out of order for some reason)

Been a minute since I’ve updated this. Parked the truck after the show this spring and wanted to rebuild my shocks and then it turned into onths being down and me changing lots of things. Got the truck back together and on the dunes today and I’m glad I did. It’s working better then ever now!

Started tearing shocks apart because my drivers front lost the Schaeder valve out of the cap(believe a rock hit following someone) idk how long I ran it without nitrogen before I noticed. This shock needed the most repair out of the batch.

I had never rebuilt any coil over or bypass shocks until this time. I picked up a master shim kit from Fox, read some stuff on the inter webs, and watched a lot of old video studying my truck and came up with some new valve stacks . As well as machined some bypass zones into my ibp coil overs.

Machined some new axle link mounts so I could spread my link separation out at the axle to achieve a lower antisquat and less rotational force on my upper links. I reworked some of the shock mounts on the front for some better load angles on the shock. Machined my own bypass zones into ride height area to keep that soft feel over chatter. I also reset ride height and adjusted my bump and droop #s. From ride height front bumps 10”(I have spacers on bumps and shock travel for 3”s more bump travel, just need to cut the firewall and part of wheel wells to get it I’ll do that this winter), and the rear bumps 16”s. For droop the front d

Last year the truck was always faster then what the shocks could handle. After some tuning, a little re working and some new machined parts here and there the shocks are now ready for a faster truck now. I’m going to keep doing some more testing and tuning the rest of my season and get this truck to where I think it can be. There’s a lot more left in this truck.

Few other things I’ve been busy doing. Re plumbed the entire brake system(old system was rushed and too many leaks chasing around) so now I actually have 4 working calipers at the same time. I machined some new rear caliper brackets as I had one that was bent from when I sheared wheel studs off. Re routed the exhaust. Re roughted all my trans lines to get away from exhaust. And I changed a bunch of other “little” stuff. Now the trucks faster and smoother, it’s dope. That’s what I’m trying to say. :saweet:

Pics from first day back in the dunes. Got it done just in time for our 2 year wedding anniversary so we went to the dunes for the day. Ran into Craig who had his baby girl with him in the dunes and on the way home blew a tire on the trailer. Unload Papa smurf on the side of the highway and rachetstrapped the axle up and had my wife drive the dodge and trailer home and I followed. Guess I have a dune rig that doesn’t need a trailer anymore you can go hit 3 foot whoops on the rev limiter and still cruise home on a Sunday. :dunno:

Man that shock was munched!!
If you did your shock and forks on the bike that all crosses over except the bypass thing.. but that’s something you obviously figured out. Very cool that your moving the ibp zones around, I’ve found on mine that almost not rebound stack still doesn’t get rid of the chatter and just like your doing opening that zone up to just bleed out seems to help a ton.. I’m wishing I had an IBP up front right now..
where did you end up for spring rates front and back??
Looks good after the rebuild.. a lot better than before!

Nice work! How was the bore on that shock that was all messed up?
Completely junk. I ordered 2 new ibp tubes from fox and replaced both front tubes. That’s why you see holes welded. I had them send me what they had in stock and I welded that bypass zone up with plugs and machined my own in. Any other bores that look questionable I hit with a hone and have it some new cross hatching. Seals are TIGHT!

Yah as you stiffen valving for big speed big hits your going to loose your slower speed characteristics....so I’ve been told by everyone. Papa smurf feels the same going 30mph thru chop or 80mph thru whoops. I was told this yesterday as I was giving someone a ride thru the whoops at speed “ do you always have your arm on the window and drive one handed like this” I hadn’t thought about it until he said it but maybes it’s not normal to be driving 80 thru whoops one handed and looking out the window at the scenery :dunno: .

Hahahahaha that’s epic!! Sunday drives!! So it’s funny you got yours on the street, I did as well and I am shocked how well it does on the road for not intending that during my build at all.. best part I found was dirt roads that were choppy for me are like the free way now lol.. it’s making me consider a 4l80 just so I can drive it more on the road..
crazy how an oops wow I can’t believe this is working like a normal car is and shouldn’t be able to???
