1968 c30 "Papa Smurf" prerunner build. links, beams, and turbo

I hope he didn't get stuck out here.
Maybe at the CA boarder they had questions about Papa Smurfs smog equipment.

I just friended him on FB and seen a video of it cruising the dunes. I told him to update his thread, he said it's way behind.

Nah he posts regularly on IG. He's got that truck dialed in.

Well long over due but decided to get back to trying to catch this thread up and continue to keep it going and not letting it lapse again. :saweet:

For starters the trip West was awesome and was a huge success. Since that trip a lot of positive things have happened and it the truck keeps getting better every outing. I moved 2 miles from the dunes so I have completely forgotten how many times I’ve been to the dunes in the last 2 summers now. I have taken the truck on 2 trips to Little Sahara sand dunes in Oklahoma which turned out being a great trip. This summer I was able to run the truck at Midwest dirtfest which is an event on a motocross track.

In my mind the truck is still unfinished and I’m still pushing to finish it. Regardless of it being unfinished the truck has gotten some attention in the last year and have been lucky enough to pick up some different sponsors including :(clothing) Dunetherapy, Shreddylyfe, Dune and destroy, Sand Sistas (tires): Gladiator tires who hooked me up with (6) 35” A/t’s (lights): Rigid industries.

On 2 occasions I have gotten to film for a television show that is coming out sometime 2020. Once in Oklahoma and once in Michigan that is all for the same television show.

I’ll be working on catching this thread up on some tech as well as some things have changed in the truck and some stuff is still all the same.

Beginning of the season for 2019 I ended up doing a gear swap on my 3rd member. I had been running 4.88 gears but switched to a 5.67 gear. I had never done a gear change on my own but 5 min on YouTube helped me figure it out. Have probably around 2-3k miles on the new gear now and still rolling well so pleased with the gear change. It got me more where I wanted as I’m dealing with a big rpm drop from 1st to 2nd. The issues is my stahl is too low do to being a turbo specific built stahl, and not wanting to spend the money on a new converter I went with a bigger gear to help close the gap which it did. It still isn’t perfect but it’s been good enough to run all summer as. It’s at a point now motor needs a turbo to get my stahl working how I want it too.

Other then the gear change the only things I did for the truck this spring was give it a good once over and didn’t find any issues.

As far as shocks go and tuning idk where to start. I’m currently on my 7th valve change in the shocks right now. Some other things I’ve done or tried is machining new ibp (internal bypass) with different zoning. Tried different oil brands and oil weights.

I know I can’t go back and explain well how I got to where my suspension is now, but it’s definitely something I have spent a lot of time on and am really happy with the progress made and the trucks capabilities. That being said I currently have plans to change more valving, move 1 (ibp) zone, and do a spring change to get the truck closer to where I want it. Just waiting for the off season at this point to spread out spending the money on the parts I need for the changes.

July was a busy month for 2019. I was already planning on going, and participating when I got asked by Gladiator tires and Rigid Industries lighting to represent them at the event and for future from then on.

I took the opportunity to do another once over in the truck which included shock rebuilds with new oil and all new valving. All other oils and fluids changed, heim, uniball, and bolt check.

Gladiator tires hooked Papa Smurf up with 6 of their 35”x12.5”x17” All terrain tires.

Rigid industries hooked the truck up with a 30” single row to hide in the grille. 2 pods to mount on my doors, and also some rear facing ambers.

Some random pics from this summer using the truck.

Wish I would have put an odometer in the truck when I started driving it. Never thought in a million years I would have been able to go to all the places it’s taken me. Here’s a list of where the trucks been in the last 1 1/2 years
- 100 + silver lake trips(have no clue at this point)
- glamis sand dunes (Cali)
- pismo sand dunes (Cali)
- Laughlin, NV (drove rage at river racecourse)
- 3 trips Little Sahara sand dunes (Oklahoma)
- Midwest dirtfest 2019
- Woodward metro cruise (Detroit,MI)

I'm not sure that God intended that much air time, but he certainly understands.

Lotsa sweet pictures, and congratulations on the sponsorships!

That thing is working better than ever Nate, and you're still fine tuning it. Awesome work on tuning the suspension so well, it works amazing.
