1971 K10 Custom/10 D60 14BFF Swap

Brought home this 1971 Chevrolet K10 Custom/10 a couple weeks ago from South Dakota. Truck was completely crusty and stock. Has some holes in the floor and lots of beautiful surface rust. Pretty solid truck other wise.

Truck has SM465 transmission and NP205 Transfer case. I was surprised to find out that this truck was originally an auto. Glad there are still men out there that would rather have another pedal
Truck came home on a like new set of 31" tires. Sold those immediately and threw on some 35x12.5x15 BFG Mud terrains I had laying around.

Drove around stock height truck on 35s for a couple weeks while I pieced together a lift setup. A friend of a friend had recently removed some 4" front lift springs from a 69 GMC K10. Picked them up cheap so they will do for now (would like to run 52" spring setup later)
For the rear I bought the 1st generation of DIY4x shackle flip kit and 4" shackle.

Cheap set of lift shocks and it was sitting 4" higher after a few hours of work.

Went for a cruise photo shoot the other day.

Inside the truck I grabbed a 90s wheel junk yard, tossed together an new cluster with an aftermarket tach.

Striped everything out and power washed the inside the cab. Then laid some dynomat down. Also had some carpet left from another project. Not molded but turned out ok. Installed new chrome threshold plates.
Used door seals from a 88-98 chevy where also installed to seal up the cab nicelyIMG_4464.JPG

I also threw on a Chevrolet tailgate in place of the non-matching GM C one that came on it. I then also welded some D rings on to the factory installed over luverne rear bumper

I'll take a new rear pic when bumper is trimmed up completely, you can see the rear in pic posted above

Hydro clutch is the next project on this truck. The idea of pulling a greesy tired ol SBC and putting it back in just doesn't sound senseable. I think a Vortec 5.3 would be a great option at that point

Found some factory added bigger mirrors at a swap meet for $5. Not sure I like them. Here is before with the tiny pointless sport mirrors

Big mirrors, thoughts?

Also got some 2 county 1969 plates for it, you can see in windshield

Never liked those big 4 point mirrors. Of course the little sport mirrors are useless, so if you want an upgrade you have to go aftermarket. There aren't many of a decent size that will fit this body style because of the multiple angles at the top of the door.

I ended up using mid 90's Ford truck mirrors for mine. I like the look myself, but you do have to modify them a bit to make it work.

IMG_2992.JPG At least these aren't the actual camper mirrors. Those are huge. The ones on my old CST

Ditched the mirrors. Sport mirrors are back on. As luck has it I dropped one and it shattered.....

Trying to decide on some steering upgrades. I want to go cross over for sure.
I plan to start with 2wd steering box, drop pitman, ORD drag link. That will get me started on the parts list. My Dana 44 does have a flat top passenger knuckle, so tap it and add a steering arm. Hopefully all that will still work once I swap in a Dana 60 front??

Anyone ever drill and tap their own knuckle?

Couldn't Tyler probably do that out at Restore A Muscle Car?

Martin
Possibly. Found someone local that would do it for $100. There is guys online that run about 50-75+shipping to them. May just send it away.

Yes it's probably a waste of money but I don't have a Dana 60 laying around to use
