1973 C10 "The Purple Truck"

Basic build
The big problem with the Van sickle paint is just getting your hands on it. We can only get it through Big R farm stores down here. They have not been restocking very frequently. The three stores I can go to, one in Canon and two in Pueblo are always out. Pisses me and Larry off. So we are about ready to switch to tractor supply and use the oil based stuff they sell.
Funny, I was just thinking I could pop down to Big R and get some.... then I remembered it's a Murdoch's now. :doah:

Murdoch's here has paint from VanSickle. They don't carry the Tisco line of it which is apparently the better level. (Not positive)
I just know that you a high solids makes a big difference compared to the regular stuff. I would want 2 - 16oz cans cuz I wouldn't want to be short. That way there would be enough to try for some shine. One probably won't have quite enough.
That and some cheap plastic to mask the rest from overspray wouldn't be too much risk to me. And easy to redo every 3 or 4 years if needed.

As Rob said, Van Sickle has definitely been frustrating to find for about the last couple years. I emailed Van Sickle where their regional sales manager blames the purchasing agent at Big R for not ordering often enough or enough quantity. He even went as far to tell me the last time they had ordered any paint and it was months. So, I bickered at Big R who his headquartered here in Pueblo. They claim Van Sickle is slow and can’t keep up with demand. Who knows, but it still frustrating. Like Rob says, we’re going to try Tractor Supply’s oil based paint.

Speaking of painting, here is a neat thing that I found that works well to shake spray cans. I've been doing a lot of painting and using spray can bedliner for a project and this thing is the cats meow! Get yours HERE

That is both funny and ingenious. Haha!

I learned something interesting about how we squarebody fans can't always assume things will interchange.

I have one of the tailgate supports that messed up.

The "rivet" for lack of a better word, that's supposed to hold the 2 pieces together has flat spots so it likes to come apart. I don't know if the previous owner did this on purpose or if it was some sort of damage. For reference, this is how it's supposed to look.

A couple months ago I pulled one off a truck in the junkyard. When I installed it in the truck I could not get it to allow the tailgate to close. I finally figured out the lower piece connected to the tailgate is almost 1" shorter on the 73 than the one I pulled.

I was back in the junkyard so I started looking closer at tailgates. There weren't any like the 73, but I figured out another difference when I looked at the 73 tailgate again. The big difference I noticed is the stud on the tailgate that the support slots into is integrated with the piece bolted around the latch. In the picture below you can see a bolt head on either side of the latch and the stud for the support below that.

On the newer tailgates the metal piece bolted around the latch is longer and the stud for the support strap is attached to that and not directly to the tailgate. This change must have meant a change in the lengths of the support. So I'm curious now how many years were done like the 73 before they switched. I might have to see if I can swap over that piece bolted around the latch.

One thing I like a lot about some newer pickups I've used is the tiedowns they're putting on the inside. So I added these in all 4 corners.

I found them searching around Amazon, but I think the original application is for late 90's or early 2000's Fords.

Now that I look at this picture larger on my screen......

The rivet thing in the middle of the good side also has flat spots. But this one doesn't fall apart like the other side. Maybe that rivet thing has gotten turned so the flat spots aren't located properly on the other side.

I ran into some problems when I tried to find the correct tailgate trunnion for my 74, it was specific to the 73-74 IIRC and was a bitch to find.

Did you ever tell us about the taillights?
I wondered if anyone would notice in that picture. No, no I didn't.... Since this truck is a street truck I can put nice taillights in and not worry about them getting busted. They came from Ecklers: https://www.ecklerstrucks.com/chevy...mblies-led-without-chrome-trim-1973-1991.html

They have the sequential turn signal and the brake lights with the quick flash before staying on. The hazards are about the coolest thing. They are kinda like the sequential. I'll see if I can get video when the sun is nearly set.

I noticed a few things are just 73-74 and I wondered if this was one of them. I can make the support work, I just have to slot it together every time I drop the tailgate. :dunno:

I replaced the seals in the door. I bought the vent window seals, but after watching a how-to video I've decided to wait and do those when I have more time.

Only big glitch I had was the strip that installs on the door. The back most clip doesn't line up.

I had a set from 1A Auto and another from GMCPauls.com that's made by Precision and they are both the same in this regard. Overall, I like the quality of the Precision seals the best.

I purchased replacement plastic clips from Dorman. They look different than the OE, but they worked fine.

Big reason I did this project now was the passenger window wouldn't roll up properly. When I pulled the door panel off, 3 little bolts fell out. They are the bolts that hold the window regulator.

Picture above was the driver door that had 1 bolt fall out with the door panel and the other 3 were loose. The 2 bolts for the vent window assembly were also loose. So I put them all back in with blue loctite.

I will be stealing that tail light style. I love led tail lights but I always want a stock appearing one and not some stupid chrome euro look.

Those are super duty tie downs. I always just add eye bolts to the bed floor wherever needed but you can't pull too hard sideways on them or the sheetmetal will bend. Did you just do tek screws or did you get fancy and put inserts in first?

The taillights use standard lenses, it's really the bases that are special. They come with new lenses and I managed to break a corner off because I didn't have it lined up properly on the base. I just ordered a typical replacement on Amazon. You don't have to changed the factory wiring, everything plugs into the sockets. The red lights are all diodes on boards, the backup lights are just LED bulbs. And you can turn off the fancy flashing functions.

Here's the one video I took of the hazards. This is also how the turn signal flashes when the brakes are applied.

I used rivet nuts.
