1973 C10 "The Purple Truck"

Basic build
I have found the cobalt steel bits last about 3 - 4 times as long in stainless as regular HSS. Still annoying.

It's alive!

Had to give it some throttle to keep it running. Should have reset the throttle screw before starting. Ultimately I had to adjust the throttle screw in a fair bit.

Before starting, I did prime the oil system for quite a while. I basically ran the drill until I had oil coming out the push rods. Also rotated the engine intermittently during the priming. The instructions from ATK said to prime the oil until all fiction surfaces were oiled so I figured better safe than sorry.

Then took it for a 2 mile drive. This is the hardest part for me, getting used to a new setup. Exhaust and engine sound different so it's a matter of getting used to the new sounds mostly. And then just earning trust again.

Yeah it's a roller cam. It was weird just jumping in and driving it right away. Like I was forgetting to do something. This is my first roller cam engine in a project vehicle.

Forgot to mention it's got over 50 pounds of oil pressure at idle. Granted they wanted 40 weight oil for the break in, so that's probably contributing.

Before and after picture doesn't look much different.

You need a second air cleaner, then you can make two into one, and have a dual snorkel air cleaner.

When I have the money for it, I'm going to go back to the cold air intake I robbed off this and put on the crew cab. I always poo-poo'd them but having an actual readout of air intake temperature, I learned they do in fact draw in cold air.

In the grand scheme of things, I really prefer the looks of a classic open element air cleaner. But now that I know I can get cold air by other means, I have a hard time going back to the open element.

Although I could do a cowl hood and maybe not suffer as much from the open element. It was so much easier working on the engine with the hood off, it makes me think about putting a fiberglass cowl hood on this.

Clean the factory air cleaner up. It looks much better than that cold air intake.

Have you ever see one that someone made into a dual snorkel? There it a punchout on both sides of the radiator support.

dremu did that back in the day. Pieced two air cleaners together and ran the snorkels to the factory locations.
