1974 K10 Dirty Sancho

Saved from cruel and unusual punishment
Are you going to post up pictures of how you take the bedsides off? I'm curious how it's done.

I watched a couple hillbilly videos on youtube before I attempted the tear down. The videos showed it's just a bunch of bolts that holds it together and one small bead at the back of the bedside where it meets the bed floor. I'll post some pics when I take the GMC bed apart. The next few days are 100+ degrees so I probably won't work on the truck until Saturday when it's back in the 90's.

If you have not taken the bed apart yet you might want to see my bed floor and fenders, the fenders are powder coated black.

I'll take a look at the pics but I'm pretty happy with the bed floor I have because it's really straight.

I've been tackling some other projects on the C10 in the mornings before the 100 degree heat kicks in.

After using 4 cut off wheels and a fried hitachi grinder I removed this fine example of cousin fuker fab

I still need to clean these up with a flap wheel after I buy a couple new grinders

When I fired the truck up a few weeks ago I noticed the PS pump was whining and later found the fluid was really low. After a quick inspection I came to the conclusion that the low pressure line was leaking so I swapped that out, added fluid and I was back in business.

For the tank mounting I ended up buying longer (31 gallon) straps so I could use the stock crossmember as one point for the straps. I need to shoot some paint on the welds and plumb the filler/breather but otherwise that's finished.

The GMC longbed has been disassembled so I can use the floor from it.

@mrk5 you can see all the bolt holes along the floor and wheel tubs that you remove for tear down. Then a couple welds at the rear corners where the bed side meets the floor need some cut off wheel action.

Never woulda thought that was there is to it.

Doing a little work here and there on the C10. The bed sides are mounted along with the tailgate with new hinges and trunnions. Also mounted the fuel filler using some continental fuel hose, a 1.5” stainless 90, boat filler neck and a bracket I fabbed. Probably need to add a filler vent, bolt the bed down, install the taillight wire harness with new taillight lenses and mount the bumper.

Once the ass of this truck is fixed I need to work on the engine. It’s smoking like a mofo and runs like shit. I think it’s running really rich and it feels like it has a miss.

Pretty Clean. Planning on a grommet through the bed floor?

I have a hell of a time with my tank overfilling at the gas station and splashing fuel out. That alone makes me tempted to put the K5 tank in. That and only having 15gal of usable fuel capacity.

I could see the 15 gallon being annoying, even my damn Honda has a 14 gallon.

I used the old 24 gallon from my K10 so the height is manageable if I decide to slam it.

Shit my '81 C30 with the big block only has a single saddle tank. With the flatbed it has there is tons of height room under the rear for any size tank. It was a county road dept truck and I think they ordered it with zero options. Doesn't even have a cigarette lighter in the flip out ash tray.

I commute 30 to 40 miles a day. It gets tiring needing gas every few days.

Over the weekend I installed the taillight harness, taillight housings and new lenses. Also mounted the rear bumper which required a little welding because the end of the frame has been trimmed off and a crossmember was added by the PO.

As I mentioned previously, this thing runs like shit, it smokes quite a bit and feels like it has a misfire. I spent some time playing with the carb, double checking the spark plug wires and reading the header pipes before I noticed a 10-12" pile of oil on my driveway. It appears the rear main shit the bed :doah:At this point I don't know what's keeping it from running decent and I don't want to waste my time replacing the rear main seal if the engine is failing. Therefore I think my next best move is to try and get the engine running right before I worry about the rear main seal.

Engine History/Summary

When I got this truck it had a half assed TBI swap done so I removed all of that and installed a edelbrock manifold, reused the plug wires and repurposed my Q-Jet and HEI from my 454. It ran like that but not very well so I picked up a used edelbrock 1406 and added shorty headers. Still didn't run great so I did a compression check on the drivers side bank and they were all within a 1-2 psi of each other. Plugs are pretty black...

So yeah.....not sure what the next move is.
