1976 C-10 Stepside Shortbox - Beagle's Build

So are we talking Edelbrock level here or like bat shit raised port brodix level?

Im intrigued. Especially about injection!

Right there under where it says visa. Yep on that dotted line......

I have seen a couple of good heads on mystery blocks before.

My buddy pulled apart his 600 mostly running big block that we pulled from an old Chevy and came up with a set of 049 heads and an aftermarket forged crank.

Guy had replaced the crank but didn't do anything to the pistons.

No, no, no. Easy now. Nothing to crazy. As much as I wish it could be. This thing is still going to be my summer daily. It will just be your basic 496 aluminum headed Fuel Injected big block.
FI won't be crazy either. The fast ez efi for my big stepside K10 is just sitting in the cabinet. I want to buy the Holly setup but most likely i will use that fast system for now.
And then upgrade the C10 when the K10 needs the fast setup back for it's 406.

Damn you guys! I let the 496 cat out of the bag!

One of my new coworkers has a set of heads. Not sure what they are yet. He's going to dig them out this weekend. He didn't know since his ex son in law left them at his house. I'll probably use them if they are aluminum. He said 300$. For that price I'll work with whatever they are.

I do have a budget in mind for the engine build. Going to try to not let it get to outa hand.

If you have decent cast iron heads, why not use them?

Martin

That's what I was wondering. Is there some reason to think that a random set of unknown aluminum heads will be superior to a random set of unknown cast iron heads?

Check your numbers before you decide to chuck them. :deal:

Weight.

Yes, of course. I will check numbers and what not.

And if my co workers heads are not a known aftermarket brand I'll go a different direction.

But ultimately it come down to weight and performance. An aluminum headed and intaked BBC is roughly the same weight as a iron headed SBC. And performance wise any modern head will be better then peanut port smog era crap. Because most likely that's what I have. This is a performance build after all.

Well that was a bust. Co worker isn't a car guy and they weren't BBC heads.

I agree. But they weren't sbc. They were that F-word. And I don't swear like that so I didn't say what they were.

Old winters heads have gotten pretty cheap, especially if they've been repaired.

And Im with you. An iron top motor has no place in a hot rod. This isnt 1975.

I've got a little coin to play with for some heads. Unfortunately I'm building a BBC. Which means the amount of coin I have to spend on heads that would buy me a pretty kickass set of SBC heads will only buy a set of "budget" BBC heads. I am looking at dart pro 1 or the trick flow oval port heads now, but I have no idea if I'll end up with those. Both are raised port. But the Dart heads run about 2500, while the Trick Flows come in around 2. Both sets built over 615 horses on a 496 test mule.

The truck has hooking problems with a worn out stock 350.... I think 600 pony's will work just fine. I am really only going to build towards a 550hp goal. With a 489/496 combo that will be easy peasy. Any budget head can achieve that. And it gives me a 500 plus horse daily. Which I feel should be a car guy bucket list item for every guy. Even if it's just for awhile.

No I didn't Marty, I did make the same HP and only 10 more ftlbs with some Brodix race rites. I made an honest 660hp with 049 heads with a good port job and 2.19/1.88 valves. I would use good old cast iron heads over any proform or pro whatever Chinese junk most idiots tout as great. My poor old irrigation motor is now making 700hp NA and 1050 on a 300 shot and after I get my suspension sorted out I plan to turn on both stages after the 60' for a 450 shot. This is a pump gas engine with a stock block and a 366 crank.

Winters heads were leaking junk in 1969 worse today.

Ah, I thought the iron heads were still on it for Drag Week.
