A 396 is a much better big block than a 307 is a small block.

Well unless some insane deal falls into my lap the plan for now is to put a new camera and lifters in the 396 and rebuild the carb and possibly a set of tbi exhaust manifolds and leave it at that for at least the next couple years. If I just love it so much after that point I'll probably just fuel inject it and be done. Only time will tell for sure on that front.

Crew is enough together that I used it to move the quads around. So fine! First time it's moved under its own power since I pulled it in the garage three months ago
Looks great, you gotta get all the trim back on before too much stuff find it's way into the body panels via the holes!

It's a little ways off yet, but I need some help deciding what cam I want to use. I'm looking at the summit cam kits for cost purposes. They have this one that looks like it will work good for me. I want a buttery smooth idle, high vacuum, instant throttle response, and don't really care about power above 5000 rpm. This truck is a cruiser and will haul the quads and hopefully some day a slide in camper. Will this can provide all that? Is it actually TOO small?

Did you mention adding fuel injection in the future? If so, I would make sure to choose a cam that will work with the FI setup you plan to use.
Truck looks REALLY good! Are you going to tint your rear sliding window? Now that I have the tinted door windows like you, I've been debating about tinting my slider. I wish the factory did a slider like the rear door windows.

Hard to tell what the future holds but if I was a betting man, I would bet that I'll keep the carb until I go with a late model motor. Fuel injection is possible tho if I just fall too much in love with the 396.

Oh and, yes, I do plan on tinting the slider. Hopefully just not quite as dark as factory but close enough to look about the same.
Look for an intake manifold so you can swap it on when you do the cam.

I probably should. Do you think the intake is really worth it with such a little baby cam? And me planning on going back to manifolds?
The stock intake manifold is garbage. The carburetor base is below the valve cover sealing surface.

Man, that looks great! I haven't been in here in a while and it was a surprise when I saw it. Welcome to the "stock restoration" club...you have preserved a very nice example...and I noticed for the first time that your hood is indeed original. (no mustache). How do you feel about it now? Will you just throw stuff in it and use it or will you baby it and keep it looking good?
The metalflake looks good too. My only regret with my paint is that I wish I had gone a little less glossy. If I had thought about it, I would have asked them to try to match the original laquer sheen.

Now get the razor blade and sideways scrape that paint off the rear window seal

Lol let's of little stuff like that tool do! I painted nearly the entire passenger side wing window some how! No, I have no intentions of babying this truck. Certainly going to avoid scratches and such, but like I said, this thing will see hundreds of miles of gravel roads yard debris and normal truck stuff. I'm sure I will set many a beer on the hood. It will just be a normal "well cared for but used" truck.
