1979 K-10 Stepside Shortbox - Beagle's Build -

Yes, it got finished Thursday. Went on the dyno yesterday.

Anyone want to guess the power output?

Edit: refer to post 53,54 for the before shot and story of the engine.

Ok here are the final numbers
Horsepower - 474.7 peak at 5,800 RPM
Torque - 514.7 peak at 4,300 - 4,400 RPM

Not bad, a few short of the 500hp goal I had set, but over all I achieved my goal of a full roller, aluminum headed, EFI 400 small block, that lays down the hammer on torque. While it's it not a big block, it will work just fine for my uses.

Solid numbers. Damn I should get some fun parts for my 408....

Didn't see this before. But yeah it's not bad for a budget build. Which believe it or not this was a budget build. I didn't really splurge on anything. Just bought basic mid grade parts. Carefully selected for my desired affect. Got to love it. It's so easy to make decent reliable power these days.

I have just a bit more in this then what I would have spent on a LS swap. (Fuel injected) but with more power then a stock 5.3. I know some will disagree.
But, I priced a low mileage 5.3 and harness and it wasn't cheap. Now if you know a guy or whatever then that's a different story. But for me I am money ahead. When I consider this is brand new and power level I have achieved.

Solid power! That is going to run awesome in a truck! Your tq curve is flat! Big thumbs up, that cam looks pretty healthy but not too crazy. Interested to hear this with full exh should sound pretty pissed off

Thanks, The whole reason in building a 400 is that tq. and tq curve. And yes the cam is heathly for sure, but since its a roller is should be streetable.

I can't wait to hear it all done up myself! I'm not really sure which way I want to go with the exhaust. I was running headman headers before but those will be tossed into the corner for some headman stainless elites. And since those tuck up a little better it will render my old pipes useless.

So I am thinkin' dual 3" pipes with an H pipe running back into a set of mufflers with a set of dumps pointed down over the rear axle. (not really into tips anymore)

So the question is now "which mufflers do I use?"

Everyone feel free to post up your suggestions on what you think I should put on here. Price really isn't of concern.

EDIT:started a thread in the garage on which muffler to use. Post it up.

I think this should be fun as hell! Looking forward to more!

My engine is fairly tame, so I don't have much help for you. I have a small roller cam as I didn't do a lot to the bottom end. Mine pulls 18 inches of vacuum even at 5,000 ft elevation. This proved to me what I had been told, "watch it as rollers rev quick". I am running 3" mandrel bent duals with an X pipe. So all I can say is make sure that you have a rev limiter. I bet you already do. I would love to have your build under my hood! !

Thanks for the compliment about my engine build. Hopefully I'll be up near Grand Junction some day and we'll be able to drink a beer and talk trucks.

Sounds like you are running a nicely set up exhaust, I would be interested in seeing a photo of your x pipe placement. (or just see the whole truck in person!)

Yes I am running a rev limiter, I ended up with an MSD ready to run distributor with a built in rev limiter.

I have really enjoyed this thread, looking forward to the continued saga:popcorn:

Thanks, comments like these really make my whole day better. It really makes me happy to hear/know that my simple exploits of car and truck building is even interesting, more or less that someone could enjoy it. In the world of gearheads I am hardly breaking new ground by any means.
This is my first build thread I have really followed through with. And I was hesitant at best about starting it. (have done other threads for other forums,(quads, olds, and canyon). They never seemed to be received as well, or anyone watching to make an update worth it, along with negative feedback.)

Unfortunately, as I mentioned before there are some other things in life I need to address this spring/(Year) before I can continue with the heavy building of this. The plan still calls for colorado elk hunting(2015) in a 474 horse red sled. Along with some financial recovering from a 500Hp engine build. But I have a small feeling there will be a post later tonight that will be of interest to this subject....TBC..
