No air compressor makes for a hurt wrist with just a chisel. :doah:Not to mention my husky air hammer sucks!

Lol you drive me nuts cause you said you would probably still pay someone else to weld your axle brackets on, even though you own a welder perfect for the job.

I was hoping you would reply...

I want structural welds not half ass welds.. I want this to be 100% daily drive able and safe.

I believe you possess common sense, and a desire for perfection. That beingthe case, iI further believe that with a little practice and guidance, you can do a weld worthy of meeting even your expectations.

Ben. Watch a tip video on YouTube or something. Then just go do it. Go weld something on. It's only metal. If you don't like it that's what grinders are for. Grind the weld off and try again. Making posts about welding in your thread isn't gonna teach you to weld:whistle:. Get to it haha

These are the wise words of wisdom that jt512 told me as well.... My welds looked like dog poo when I first started but every time I pick up the gun now they get better. All it takes is a little practice and some critiquing from the guys on here and you'll be alright.

Even "dog poo" welds are better than NO welds!! :D

Your a good kid Fyffe.
Thank you. :thumb:

My first welds were horrible, only cause I can't read. Once I realized I read the sheet wrong I was able to mess with my settings.

Still not the greatest, I brought the piece into work and my buddy said I had good penetration just went to slow and laid to much into it. I still have tons to learn but overall I'm happy with my progress being made with maybe 2 hours of welding.

My reasoning behind not wanting to weld the 4 link is look at the picture above.:haha: With some practice, patients and pointers I will be able to eventually, but I can have someone come over for free and do the welds. He has been welding buildings for 25 years. I will be doing plenty of welding on the truck, mostly filling in holes.

The best way to learn is to buy some square tube or angle and cut it up and glue it back together. Thinner stuff is imo a bit harder to do without ****ing it up. I cut a VW hood into pieces and then welded it back together. Warped the hell out of it but it was a good learning experience. Listen for that bacon sound.

That is the plan and I think I hear that.

All the rivets are out. I knocked one clean off the frame with just a single hit. Only have a couple hand fulls of rivets left in the frame now.

Hey Nate. :flipoff7:

I'm progressing faster then I thought I would. Granted I still have a lot to learn but for only have a few hours at most into the machine they don't look to bad.

I know you said you bought nozzle dip, but good god man, by some anti splatter spray.

Getting better though. Move a little faster or spread the weld wider by a small amount. Faster may make penetration worse, so there may be a give in your style. But those beads look like they would hold crap together.

How does the anti splatter work? Do I spray it on the metal or the trigger? I know silly question but I don't know. I have found I go to slow, suggested wire speed is 60 those were around 40-45.

One thing I need to learn is how to set the regulator on the gas. I'm lost on that one.

Thank you for the suggestions and tips.

You spray anything you don't want splatter to stick too. Including the metal you are welding. The torch will burn through it.

The regulator can be a little different for every machine. What I do with a new to me welder is, start running a bead. Have someone turn the regulator down until the weld goes to crap, then turn it back up 3 or 4 psi. If out side in the wind, it may have to be turned up more.

This has been done all in the garage, I don't remember where I set the regulator at off the top of my head.
