I just want to do it right the first time.

Than get a 14 bolt with an open carrier and get a detroit! A G80 is NOT doing it right the first time. Its doing it a way that will work for a while until you give up on it (or it gives up on you) and you have to hunt down an open carrier and put a detroit in it.
 
Let me elaborate if i may. Getting a 14 bolt under there and road worthy will take virtually no time. You can have it bolted up and brakes bled within 2 hours at the worst. Stick it in there with the open diff to get you on the road. Then, when you get the detroit, swapping it in will take no more than 4-5 hours TOPS. They are stupidly easy to instal and are the best traction devise for a street vehicle that you also want a full locker in. So, my point is, even if you decide to go a different route, the 14bolt only cost you 2 hours out of your life to instal. You put an AAM in there and who knows how long it will take. Put a standard 14FF with a G80 in there and you will find yourself wishing you would have gone detroit to begin with.

Anyway, these are just my thoughts and opinions but i would venture to guess that most folks on here agree. The flip side is that its your truck, and in the end, WTF do you care about my thoughts and opinons!? do with it as you please.
 
Opinions and thoughts are always welcomed, sometimes that's what gets peoples heads out of their arses.

The reason for the 10.5 was because I have been searching for around 5 months for a 14bolt to "bolt" in with no luck.
 
Its just hard for me to wrap my mind around it being difficult to locate what is possibly the most common rear end known to man. Now that i say that, i really wonder what is the absolute most common rear axle of any kind of vehicle? :thinking:
 
You and me both... I have a Craigslist notifier with the titles of

14 bolt, 14bolt, 3/4, 3/4ton, axle pair, chevy axle, gmc axle, chevy rear end, gmc rear and full float axle. I refresh this at least 2 times a day. I'm also looking for parting out trucks. I have found one on a junkyard search for $350.
 
dont toss the gov-loc g80 for a 14ff under the bus just yet. :whistle:

i run them and have for years plowing / snow wheelin / mud / trials / dd use. i LOVE my g80 option in a 14ff ONLY . and if you know its there and how to use it correctly it will live a long life.

i took one out years ago inplace of a detroit. first snow in town i wished i hadnt swaped it for the detroit. if i wanted to go any place it had to be in 4wd or the ass would come around to meat the front.

i finaly got tired of it for street/snow/dd use and sold to a member here years ago and since swaped the gov loc back in place and love it all day long. :bow:

the trick is knowing its there and NOT slambing it in to action.
 
Ya why not get a 14sf? Still plenty of beef for what you're doing.
 
I would have to relocate the perches and stuff anyway on a 14SF

That and I'm dieing to use these wheels

You can use them on either a SF or an FF.
You will also have to relocate the spring perches on either one of them.
And do you have 8 lug hubs and rotors for the front, brakes will interchange.
And if I remember right there are big bearing and small bearing spindles, 8 lug would be big bearing.
 
I need to rebuild the front 6 lug axle a little so I'm waiting to see if I can find a 8 lug rear.
 
Do you ever see old trucks sitting around? Just stop and ask. I find a lot that way.

A SF will bolt right up as long as its not out of an IFS truck. And they come in 8 lug. 85(?)+ 3/4 tons had 14 bolt semi floaters in them.
 
You may have to make a bit of a trip to pickup a cheap rearend. If your gonna hassle with changing the rearend just do the simple and best option... Cant go wrong with a 14bff.
 
I agree with you guys can't beat the simple swap of a 14bff but for the same price why not the aam 10.5 with disk brakes? Sure you will have to move the perches and shock mounts.

Just depends on which deal comes up first.
 
The AAM usually isnt cheap. Atleast around here. I would bet a regular 14bt with some DIY4X or ORD disk brake brackets and cheap 3/4 calipers/rotors would be alot cheaper. But I have been wrong before, just ask my X.

He'd have to do the same thing for an old 14 bolt unless you found one out of a 3/4 ton.

The AAM brakes are miles ahead of the old drums or a disc brake swap, and they've got a built in parking brake. I cant think of a reason to not buy the AAM 14 bolt. I tried to find one to put in my SAS truck instead of my CUCV 14 bolt for the brakes.

$325 is a steal for an AAM 14 bolt, especially if it's complete with brakes. The bigger rear ends G80's seem to hold up better than the 10 bolt G80's. The one in my 14 bolt SF still worked remarkably well with 160k miles on it. I say go for it, you'll get something much newer with better brakes and integrated parking brakes, you'll be money ahead.
 
I guess even if you can't get the AAM to work, you could always sell it for what you paid for it (as long as you don't mess it up too bad moving the perches and stuff). I think you can rebuild Gov-Locs unless they're just totally exploded. One thing though, will your current master cylinder work with the AAM's disc brakes?
 
My brother runs an AAM in his, and went through hell and high water to put a parking brake in it. Now it does work phenomenally. But it was a nightmare he said, and has well over 1000$ into it.

Now me, I cut all the ebrake crap off to save weight, going to just use regular ol disk brakes from DIY, and laugh at him. I have no need for a parking brake, as my automatic has a park on it.

I say if thats what you want, dive in. Its a great axle, but brakes, and other parts for it are quite a bit pricey compared to simple old 14bt parts you can get anywhere. And IF there is a strength advantage, its at the best minimal. What you get is more expensive brakes and a parking brake.
