For the piece of frame I goofed up on welding I'm getting a patch piece for 10 bucks. Would it be ok If I cut the piece in a rectangle shape then do a chamfer on the frame and patch piece and weld it in? I remembering the term "v" the cracks on a frame so I believe I'm on the correct track.

A 82lb box of goodness is being delivered Friday from ORD. :woot:
 
Wish that was the case, I won't be getting all of it this week. I have to work this Saturday but Sunday I'll be at it.
 
I could be wrong but I think you would want to do the patch more oval shapped. The rectangular piece could have stress points at the corners. Or does the patch include the edge of the frame?
 
It would be the edge, was thinking just the top.

Reason I ask is I don't like how my patch is turning out and I can get the piece for 10 bucks.

Just like this, hopefully the cut would be better then my drawing.

Again, I may be wrong but I would do it like a half oval if that makes sense or I'm sure it's probably fine to do it rectangular.
 
Maybe, I'm not sure either. I thought doing a chamfer would allow it to not create stress cracks, just like in concrete but I would fill it in with a weld.
 
Sharp corners create potential for cracks, or so I've been told. If you kept the patch piece a rectangle and just rounded the corners, you should be okay. Drill holes where the corners would be at the spot you're cutting out to, again, avoid sharp corners. Then cut between the holes. Bevel the edges, like you said, for the best penetration.

Although, it's hard to tell from the picture, the spot in question doesn't look all that bad IMO. You'll have an engine crossmember in there which will add way more strength than a patch piece.

And, a $10 patch piece doesn't sound that cheap to me. I can get a ten foot piece of 3"x 1/4" strap for $18 or so.
 
This piece would be from a junkyard cut with a torch. I will have them cut it big so I can fit it. For me knowing that it looks original is worth the 10 dollars vs my booger area.

The top side looks great but the bottom side is a different story. :eek1: With any little weld it blows through. I can't seem to find the happy medium on the welder to get it to work correctly.
 
I think you should just go ahead and fabricate a custom 2.75" chromoly tube chassis for the truck instead.

Yah I was just about to say that it needs custom bumpers, fiberglass flare fenders, fiberglass bed, and might as well link the rear while your back there.

I know it's not fubar I just want to patch it correctly and have it smooth on both sides. With my skill level with the welder I'm having a very hard time with that.

So whats the proper way to weld it in?

You guys are great though. :haha:
