Don’t ruin your heirloom truck by beating it into a race truck.

You 100% will end up regretting it. Save the money of the suspension rebuild an get another 4l60 so you have one on the shelf ready to go
That's kinda what I was thinking. You take it racing, crash it into a million pieces, there goes all that work that connects you to your pa.

Seriously though, take it from a few of that have raced something before. the racing bug is wormhole. Your better off starting with a new rig you can purpose build....

This^^^^!
I got bit by the racing bug and turned my perfectly awesome almost done restoring shortbed into a racer and still regret it.

Do not race your truck. Walk away. Enjoy the racing scene from the support truck. Any dip into racing is expensive. You need external financial support or your own deep pockets. I get that bug every time I go to a race of any kind. I have the expertise to build any race vehicle. But the money involved would take away from my retirement and existing life plans.

The mom and pop racers, you, have fun during the race, but stress about it the rest of the time.

Do not do it to your truck.

Yeah I’ll pile on

Ruined many a decent car making it a racer. Finally bought a tubbed and back halved 68 Camaro and dumped the engine it

Wasn’t cheap.

Also originally was going to bob and lift the 77. I would have ruined the truck at that time and age. Got the 72 instead and ruined it. I don’t feel bad about that (first gen guys are still pissy but, meh!)

This is good advice, and one I am following, too.

After my recent off-road trip, I realized that I wanted to push the truck harder than was appropriate given its heirloom status. I would never forgive myself if I rolled or crumpled the suburban, and a connection to my dad and childhood would be forever lost.

Your Swiss Army knife of a truck is badass as-is, but a scalpel is what you are looking for, and one without familial attachments. Build something to race.

Heed others’ advice.

Woah Nellie!!

I’m gonna jump on this bandwagon again..
you saw Bradfield wasn’t even competitive out there.. BBF etc and he’s in 2000 and that thing is fast but not like anything with independent suspension.. I think you’ve got the bug, I’ve got it too.. and mines more apt to be turned into the race rig but like these guys said, it was dads and that would completely ruin it.. mine is pretty close to that.. we’re gonna build another truck we can do 1450 with that is ground up.. none of this adapting crap etc.. you are more than welcome to tag along.. get your butt to KOH and I’ll put you in mine and the k20 and you can see what I mean.. the sfa is fast but not the same or as stable at the race speeds as the Ifs trucks are.. I think if you stay on track to build it with links out back, cage it, etc but don’t go much crazier than that.. you’ll be super happy and you won’t have completely ruined it..

I thought you wanted to build this into an overlander rig?

Being I'm from cornfields I don't know shit about desert racing, but a regular cab long bed doesn't even come close to what I think of when I think "desert racing"

Class 8 isn't very built so to speak. The racing bug has been here for a long time. It will be like a once a year thing if that. It's a all around build do a little of everything for fun. It will always be a street driven truck that can be used in all terrain's.

No way I would ever build it to be competitive racing because that will take the use out of the truck and next thing you know it's skinned and back halfed.

I mean think about it, the truck gets wheeled once a year of that in Moab, I didn't need the coilovers and air bumps but I wanted them...

He needs the long bed to carry all the extra 4L60 trannys he'll burn up when he races. :haha:

Quick disconnect on everything including bolts. Slide the new one in from the top through the bed and continue on racing.

We are really piling on poor Ben.

We all love ya dude.

That is your fault that it only gets wheeled once a year. You live in wheeling mecca. Get it out in the dirt and enjoy it. Go camp out of it. Make some plans and use it.

Man, I sound like my dad.
Very much true, now that I know I can depend on it I'm going to take it out. I just need to reseal a few things and go for it. I honestly for awhile didn't have the money to drive or fix it and only could do one trip. I need to get out and meet new people.

No golf cart race car here.

Not to sound mean or anything but you guys know what a class 8 truck is right? I know of a few that does.
This year it's class 8.. then next year it something alittle faster... More competitive... It's a rabbit hole man... That what we are telling you....
