1983 K10, Shannons truck. ***UPDATE POST #418***

They sound pretty good on hers actually. I dont think turbo mufflers count either. Can you see through them? I know my last turbo mufflers you could still see through and that is what they are looking for.

And idk what you are talking about :whistle:


Crap! I forgot about the need for a spark arrestor... It's been prolly 10 years since I've been to the dunes. Iirc the super turbos I have on my '66 Nova were not see through, though not sure how they would check if you have some sort of tailpipe.:dunno:

Last time I was there they checked the big gun pipe on my DS650 with a sort of stick, just gave it a poke to see if it stopped.

Shannon replaced her radiator. Much better and more secure now, but I cannot get the air out of the system... Ive never ran into this before, i spent 3 hours trying to burp the air out of it... Any suggestions?






 
Maybe the thermostat has screwed the pooch and not opening?
 
Could be tstat.

How are you burping it, running cap open i take it?
 
I thought thermostat, but it ran perfectly fine yesterday before we swapped the radiator...

I have tried it with cap of and cap on. Normally with mine i always do it with cap off and it works after a few minutes of running and it works just fine. Think ill try a thermostat anyways, few bucks and cant hurt to try. Its a 15psi radiator cap if thats worth anything. I tried both the one that was on this radiator, and the one on her old one, and saw no changes. It seems to be building alot more pressure than it should.
 
Two things i have had help.

Pull the top hose of the heater core if it has one. Should leak, if not poke a funnel in there and add coolant.
Worst case, pull the belt and turn the pump backwards by hand.

No one left a rag in the thermostat housing did they?
 
you should look at the level of the fill cap on the rad to your t-stat .

that radiator is for a 80-older truck via the hight in most applications . if she has a body lift it will sit lower yet .

if any thing space the rad up and use the correct upper mounts .

edit : I can see the body lift gap at the front bumper . and the upper rad hose looks to be running down hill to the rad in the 1 pic also .

highest point gets air pockets .

2 points:

1) If it's building a lot of pressure, check for air leaking into the cooling system (compression test). You can't burp a system that's getting charged with air on every revolution.
2) That radiator looks lower than the engine (might just be the camera angle). If it's not the high point of the system, the air won't naturally collect there. As every Fiero owner knows, weird dances can be required to burp such a system. It's not the end of the world, you'll just need to slap one of these stickers on it:

Both those points were raised before, but I wanted to point out that either one can cause symptoms like you describe. Even if it was perfect before (NOT a compression leak), you introduced air into the system during the swap. I hope you're just dealing with the fallout from that. Compression leaks are a lot less fun. :(
 
Its much funner when your lady friends actually enjoy the sport. Mine has been bugging me terribly about finishing the S-10 3/4 ton coil spring swap with the 350 for her daily driver. Lol Practical isnt her strong suit, but she is fun and enjoys the hell out of them, so thats whats important.
 
With the radiator that low you may want to try burping the system with the nose of the truck on a hill or up on some ramps.

If your thermostat was stuck shut, wouldn't the temp. gauge alert you rather quickly? :dunno:

I can't see you spending 3 hours with an overheating engine and failing to notice the temperature.
