1986 K30 - Rapid Learning

Get 'er cleaned up and solid.
Plates haven't come in the mail yet. I'm not too worried yet, because I am sure the DMV is backed up.

Drove the K30 a couple nights ago to a friend's house. Hit a few potholes one after the other and the truck shook back and forth over and over... kind of like death wobble. I was able to pull off to the side of the road and stop. Once I came to a stop it stopped shaking immediately.

Anybody got an idea of something for me to check? What else could cause death wobble along with bad tires and bad kingpins? Maybe my u-bolts are loose? *shrug*

Well I have bad bushing in front rear eyes, and frame. The front eyes spring will walk either left or right depending on turn. No death wobble.
If wheel bearings were sloppy the wobble would stop or reduce as soon as brakes were applied, so am thinking you are good there.
You just did the king pins, possible they lossened up.
Slop in any of the steering gear.
Wouldn't hurt to re-torque the u bolts

Oh man, I'm next! We'll see how it works out..

@FallGuy86 just want to make sure you know that I never actually passed emissions. I never even got it tested. If you have the title complete notice then you can make it thru the full workflow... they never ask for proof of emissions.

I suppose I shouldn't talk all confident until my plates come in the mail, but still... you might go through the trouble of making your truck emissions compliant then never have to actually prove it is when getting your plates.

Hmm, don't have a "title complete notice". Just have a bill of sale and the title signed over to me. The guy priced the truck low and signed the title without a date so I didn't get popped with late fees by not registering sooner, I guess.. I'll get online and see what I can do.

Did they go by current market value, original price or some other way to charge you taxes?

You'll probably have to go into the DMV and present the signed title and bill of sale and they'll use whatever price is on the BoS to determine the sales tax. Once you do that, they will either print a new title on the spot for you or mail you one. They'll also send a "title complete notice" to your home after that. Mine showed up a few days after my DMV visit. Once you have that title complete notice, that's all you need to get through the first-time registration website.

So getting the title in my name isn't actually the registration step. I looked around online and the only option I've got is to go up there.. I'll have to make an appt.

Eventually I do want to build a wooden sleeping platform in the bed. Throw a mattress on top. Drawers built in that hold all my camping stuff. Sounds like a dream.
That's what I did in my crew cab.
Used it for years

Thank you man that's nice of you!! I love this thing. I've been out of the garage for a bit due to injury but it has got a lot of work coming its way soon.

Looks like you're in Golden, if you ever want to get together for a beer or something let me know.

Me too, me too, I like Beer! Plus anytime you need an extra set of hands lemme know and I'm willing to help if I can..

You betcha. Yessir, in golden. I don’t get on here near as much as I should but there’s some good folks on here no doubt. Nice to see new blood finding these old beaters and fixing em up:waytogo: love beer so much I was turning into a fat f—k last summer so now it’s just straight booze lol.

Hey guys, I got the truck out today in preparation of getting an alignment for it tomorrow afternoon. I also wanted to pass by a roadside emissions tester that the state set up.

I got death wobble when driving about 35 mph on a local road. Luckily I had plenty of room to pull over. Anyhow, I was doing a little reading and found this post on Pirate about Dana 60 death wobble:
https://www.pirate4x4.com/threads/dana-60-death-wobble-research-for-fixes.493908/

When looking at my notes on this build, I remembered that the PO did steering column work. Here is what he said: "steering box is good, steering column is non-factory". I can't help but wonder if that's what is causing my death wobble. I am getting the alignment because that page on Pirate mentions bad alignment being a big cause of death wobble. If my alignment report comes back and everything is already decently aligned, I think I can say for sure that it is related to my steering. It feels "loose" when I turn the steering wheel, not sure whether that is related. The reason I think it has to be steering is because I've already replaced the tires and redid the kingpin parts. That post on Pirate doesn't mention much else except for "brakes" and "loose suspension".

Under loose steering, the page says "tre's/loose steering box etc"... what are tre's? When they say loose steering box, do they mean a worn out steering box or literally it is loose at the frame? Or both?

tre is short for Tie Rod Ends. reach through the drv fender wheel grab the intermediate steering shaft and turn back and forth the look at rag joint watch for play, then watch the pitman arm turn shaft back and forth till pitman arm moves, there will be a little slop but should be no more than a slight twist. lift springs reduce caster which will affect steering. I don't think the column would give death wobble. Loose front end part will, retorque your spring u bolts, check the spring eye bushing.

To date, all of my death wobble issues have been due to poorly balanced tires.

A good alignment shop will tell you if you have bad/worn steering components. They should tell you they need to be replaced before getting the alignment done, otherwise it's a waste of time.

35 mph those would some terribly out of balance tires. Maybe separating tires

I've had that happen with tires that weren't that bad. They were at least 10% tread left, but they were intact and otherwise good condition.

I was selling axles here on CK5 that were still in my K5. The buyer was really curious about the gearing and 35" tires, but mine were 37" tires. It so happened I had a set of 35's on wheels from a buddy's rig he'd take off to upgrade to 40's. I thought, "hey I can throw those tires on and the buyer can get a good feel for how it will run the gearing in his truck. Should help seal the deal!" I didn't get 1/2 mile from the shop going 35mph and BAM death wobble! Turned right around and put my 37s back on and the death wobble was gone. Didn't figure I could sell the axles if the guy thought they had a death wobble problem.
