1989 Camaro RS

I'm wanting to do a timing set and new distributor to help with an issue of the timing wandering a little.

With the advance wire unhooked, the timing bounces around just a little. I figure a new timing set in a 100k engine isn't a bad idea and I want a new distributor while I'm at it.

MSD and ACCEL both make TBI distributors but neither get good reviews it seems. DUI makes one as well but I'm wondering if I wouldn't be just as well off to get an AC Delco reman unit from Rock Auto. Any advice?

Keep the factory one if it is still working.

I think my timing jumping around is in the shaft of the distributor. Probably excessive end play allowing the shaft to bounce. I guess I could pull it and shim it if I can find shims but I feel like a new one would be a better step.

Friday the oldest daughter and I hit the big cruise-in on Williamson Road in Roanoke with my buddy Matt and his Fox body.

My night ended early due to a failed cooling fan. I tried to limp it out of traffic but it hit 260F+ and was boiling in the recovery tank. I shut it down, popped the hood and let it sit till it got below the red zone on the gauge, then shot though a parking lot to a back road where it cooled right down at speed.

I checked everything this evening and the cooling fan motor is shot. Got one ordered and now we wait.

It wasn't there long. Once the gauge got up in that area I was looking for somewhere to pull over and get the hood up.

The fan motor wasn't completely dead, just mostly so it kinda spun enough to get it to stop boiling with the hood up and engine off.

These 80s 305s are pretty tough, especially with iron heads. It's just a truck engine with a roller cam in it for no real reason what so ever. I'm actually more worried about the transmission and I'll be doing a fluid change on it very soon.

I ordered new sway bar bushings and links for the front. I'm going to install the Wonderbar and figured I'd do new bushings while I was in there.

Next up will be front struts.
