1989 Diesel Jimmy. What do we have here hmmmm

so you busted up your yoke ( broke the little flange that holds the cap in).

So your a self respecting redneck? What do you do, well self respecting redneck would go over and take it off his buddies axle:D or pull a part off his collection of axles.

Well I am not a self respecting redneck, just a guy who has a 60 waiting in the wings. So what do I do. Yep weld it. Welded the caps of the joint into the yoke. It occured to me that will make the driveshaft rather difficult to remove but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

The thing that really ticks me off is I put it in backwards so I can't get a grease gun to the grease zerk.

Also my batteries finally gave up the ghost today too. It would happen today as we were supposed to leave at 5 or so to head up to a buddies cabin for the weekend.

As I was replacing my batteries the terribly corroded cables basically fell apart. 2 of the lugs fell off on the battery end. Down to the store for some 2 gauge and some lugs. Have all new positive cables now. Will do the negative later. Also replace the alternator to battery wire with some 8 guage instead of the 10 gauge that was there.

The truly amazing thing is I did everything properly, soldered and heat shrinked on all connections, except the alternator to battery because I didn't have any bar lugs so I used the lugs I had which are the crimp kind that has the heatshrink already on them.

Sorry no pics. Horton is minus a tie rod and my buddies bronco II is minus a front axle and they were taking up the garage space. So it was outdoors work for me tonight.

Being Memorial weekend it was of course raining

:haha:
Oh well if that had happened to me I would not have gone to the store for any of the above mentionned parts, I have piles of them including a dozen batteries, 2 of which are brand new.

So little update, holy crap I didn't know the diesel was supposed to crank that fast, after replacing all the positive cables with 2 gauge, and 2 brand new batteries it actually scared me the first time I cranked it.

Needless to say the charging system is up to spec now.

Went to Boise this last week to help a buddy for a couple days.

Took the Jimmy.

Learned some stuff. I need new seats, cushioning in my seats is broke down bad, right butt cheek was unhappy with the steel bar under all the broke down cushioning.

I develop leaks it seems on a long trip, time to really give the underside a good washing and start chasing leaks.

Pretty serious leak coming from the slip yoke on the t-case.

Another thing that is weird, when the Jimmy gets low on oil it starts smoking. It doesn't smoke at all when its full of oil, but when it gets a bit low it starts smoking bad, which is weird I think.

Next on the agenda, find leaks, fix leaks.

Anyway just under 700 miles, about 350 each way, other than replenishing fluid in the t-case and adding some oil pretty trouble free.

sounds like a good trip Eric, how was fuel mileage?

Well when you get low on oil, the oil itself get's hotter, and thinner and can get past the rings and burn, that is the only thing I noticed on mine when that happened.

around 18

Not bad in my mind, I mean the truck has a 6" lift and 35s, I would like to see it get a bit higher but overall pretty happy with the mileage.

Also I was cruising around 70 mph most of the way. Plus I had a headwind the vast majority of the way there and no tailwind on the way back

18 is pretty great. I think thats about what mine is getting.
Good idea on the battery cables that's on the need to do list.

Ugh, that makes me want a 6.2 alot lol. I wouldnt even need to drive my car in the summer at all because it doesnt get that much better mileage. :doah:

Everytime you floored it you would no longer want the 6.2 Adam.

LOL it suits my needs just fine though. I couldn't afford to daily drive the Jimmy if it was a gas motor.

Good to hear, what gears are you running? I forget.

The batteries and cables made the thing crank so fast it actually scared me the first time. I turned the ignition off really quick and then realized that its just cranking alot faster :D

Minus the lift and tires that thing was rather unmolested. Needed maintenance too, part of the unmolested.

True it was unmolested but not clean. I started to take the carpet up to check stuff................. I just put it back down and walked away trying to forget what I saw. :eek1:

It was definitely a Utah truck

now you sound like salesmen...shame shame...

IF YOU SAW'DED IT, ITS THERE!!!!

Well in my mind anyway, then it eats at my brain till I fix it.. :doah:
