1989 Diesel Jimmy. What do we have here hmmmm

Are you sure your glow plugs are coming on?

You do realize that using starting fluid in these motors can cause damage to the glow plug system.

I would start by bypassing the glowplug control and doing it manually.

Issam is right though they are super sensitive to air in the system. My fuel pump was leaking just a bit and it made it very hard to start

It don't hurt the glow plugs none -- What it hurts is the intake when it explodes :eek1: :haha:

Okay so soon should be getting a motor with the banks turbo kit on it for the Jimmy.

Couple of questions.

Harmonic balancers are a big problem right? I have read that quite few places.

I can't afford some 300 dollar balancer from TCI, rock auto has ATP balancers for anywhere from 58 bucks to 78 they all look different, and then has an AC Delco balancer for 146.

Are the ATP good to go. Or do I need to spring for a better one, and where and what brand. Honestly at 60 bucks I think I would just replace it every 50k or so.

Also interested in what gaskets are problem areas. Worth it to tear down and do head gaskets? Or rear main?

Just trying to get a budget figured up for this. The Jimmy has so many leaks right now I want to get some of them under control

So on one has opinions on the different brands of harmonic balancers.

Should I replace it or not?

Because I have a new motor with some sort of round thing sticking off too the side.

If the rubber is cracking I would. What does a gm one cost? Otherwise I would look at a cheap napa one for the time being. I am going to need to buy one too.

I got a pro street or something from summit. Cheap, but seems to work good.

AC Delco was 146 but I have seen them for around 80 bucks. Not sure which one I will get or if I will even get one.

I have no clue how many miles are on this motor so I will clean it up and if it looks good than its good.

Plan on putting my new water pump on from my 6.2 and cleaning everything up. Replacing some gaskets but only where its leaking from.

Last time I took a motor down to " just replace the gaskets" it turned into a full rebuild that still isn't done

Wanna say thanks to Keith for getting this thing here for me.

He got all sorts of good parts from his brother Jack which is where I got the motor from.

Boost and pyro gauge, exhaust, weird air cleaner setup I think Jack ( blazooki) made, gotta call him and ask. Couple other things too.

I would use a fan clutch over that flex fan (assuming because of the hub)

Its only a diesel, you don't need a balancer...:haha::haha::haha:

so 241 issues.

I am leaking fluid out the back of the case. Out of the tailshaft housing.

Going to replace the oil seal, is there anything else in there that needs to be replaced to help this.

I know a couple of guys with this same problem and they all went to SYE. I simply can't afford one.

So the preemptive question. Am I just going to have to replace that seal constantly because of the lift. My rear driveshaft is not a CV style but it doesn't have vibes, works very well.

bushing

There is a bushing inside the 241 tail housing that the yoke rides on.
Real simple but you need to pull the tail housing to swap it.
Get them from GM only. Aftermarket just fall thru.
They call it a Transfer Case Extension Bushing
part#15665313 Like $8-$12 bucks.

What I do on my 241, is pack the outside lip of the rear seal with heavy weight grease. Keeps slight pressure on the yoke and fluid stays inside.

What Irish said.

GM only. The NAPA brand and AutoZone brand ones I got literally dropped straight through.

I'm pretty sure I read a thread on guys drilling a hole in the case and adding a grease zerk right on the top of the bushing, then a little hole going through bushing for grease to get through. They where claiming that the top of the bushing doesn't see much lube. Might be an idea?

Thanks for the part number Irish:thumb:

Is there a problem with these going out on lifted trucks?

I know a couple guys who have never got them to seal properly

Thanks Scott when I take it apart I will look at it.

Right now my exhaust is getting lubed very very good.

Enough to make me think I was blowing up something driving the other day

I think the strain is higher on lifted trucks, and that causes a lot more issues with those seals on the slip yokes. I have replaced the one on Krusty before and I know it needs to be replaced again. Like you, I can't afford an SYE, but I am probably going to go that direction fairly soon.

Yah a sye is in the future plans but not going to happen anytime soon. New tires are pretty high on the list right now.

Going to head to the local transmission warehouse in the morning, see what they have. Plus call my GM dealership see if the part number is good to go

So dang hope the local GM stealership has it

From GMparts direct its only like 5 bucks with 13 bucks shipping and a 5 bucks for a handling fee!

Well, I will say I had no trouble with the Napa brand seal I used, but I have a 205 so there may be a difference. Good luck, hope you get her fixed up.
