1989 K5 - Gradual Learning

First 4x4 - learning basic maintenance / upkeep and maybe some small mods.
I would be tempted to try JB Weld, at least for the short term.

I'm scared of the piece coming loose again and falling into the engine.

I am fairly confident that I have a couple of throttle bodies. I could see if Rob would haul one back with him from Moab.

Wouldn't a tbi throttle body be a fairly common part at a junkyard?

I miss the Denver yards. Always tons of good junk to pick through.

Yeah, looks like there are a few late 80s and early 90s C/K 1500 trucks at the Denver U-Pull. They're gonna charge me $50-$100, but I'll definitely hit one on Saturday if I can't get one prior.

Non insulated but crimps solder and heat shrink, is what size. Robs shop has the but connectors probably heat shrink too

The K30 made the 110-mile round trip up to @mrk5's shop last night. I was fortunate to be able to hang out with Scott awhile and see all of the cool stuff he has on the property. We chatted for about 20 minutes or so and I grabbed the throttle body assembly. I'm gonna try and get everything installed this weekend. Cross your fingers for me.

Thanks again to Scott for meeting up with me and giving me such a great deal.

I finished installing the new parts, but the K5's battery was dead. Not sure why it got drawn down so far but I've got it charging now.

I got the damaged bowls of my throttle body removed and replaced with the good bowls from Scott's. The swap wasn't too bad, although I briefly thought I had stripped the fuel line that plugs into the backside. I ended up stealing that piece from Scott's throttle body as well and everything went fine. I tried to stay calm and just take my time.

When installing the new injectors, I actually read the directions from AC Delco. There was a comment in there about placing the little nub on the bottom of the injector into the recessed portion of the bowl. I thought to myself.. man I bet I screwed that up the last time I did this. Sure enough, I took a look at my damaged piece and found this:

Somehow I managed to install both injectors "upside down" - both bowls had markings inside of them. I don't know if the connector pins on the injectors are pos-neg, but if so then they were flipped on both bowls.

All I can do is laugh at myself and move on. One of those school of hard knocks things... and it makes me feel like the Blazer is finally going to run well once I am done with this. Overall I feel confident with this job I did tonight aside from the torque spec on the screws. I was so scared to snap the throttle body bowl that I think I probably went a little too light. But I'm going to fire it up once the battery is charged and see if it leaks... then go from there.

Do you guys use loctite on the 8 throttle body screws? The AC Delco instructions said to use Loctite 262, which is red. All I have is Loctite 271 but they said anything stronger than 262 could damage things. I do have blue threadlocker... maybe I could put that on.

First test drive last night. Reset the IAC fresh. Started it up, had to give it a little bit of pedal to get it to fire off. Let it warm up a while. It sounded pretty good. When I backed out of the garage, I put it into drive and it died. Started it back up easy and drove it about 15 minutes down I-25. It was off for maybe 10 minutes, then I fired it up again without issue and drove it home.

The stumble is still there, unfortunately. Minimum air is a suspect, MAP sensor is a suspect. I am not sure how I want to move forward. It's not easy to admit on this forum but I am considering just bringing it to the garage near my house. The owner of the shop drives a GMT-400 so he knows TBI real well.

While the K5 was warming up in my garage, I recorded a video of the injector spray... does this look good to you guys?

It looks like it's still dribbling fuel, but maybe I'm just paranoid and this is normal.

Hard to see the Dr side on phone but pass side looks to be skipping and uneven. I forget are these new injectors?

Yep, both are new AC Delco.

Ain’t nothing wrong with admitting you’ve reached the limits of your abilities.

Yeah, I feel like I'm at that point. The guys here have given some other possibilties to look at, but I think I'm just frustrated. Maybe I'll drive around with the Tech 1 scan tool a couple more times and just see if I have a Eureka moment.

also thinking an adjustable fuel pressure reg might be a good investment. DO you remember the injector part number.

Also if you haven't done so yet advance the base timing 2-4° before top dead center.
