1989 Toyota 4Runner

Building the truck my friend won’t be able to
O’reilly’s rental. I opened the valves all the way and still zero. I pulled a vac through them no issue. Got an acquaintance with a shop I’m gonna see if he’ll check it for me.

Well it was cool on the way to o’reilly’s to drop the rental stuff off. Bought a temp gauge and drove home. Best it would do is 10* below ambient and it was noticeably warmer than when I went there. The no idle up thing sucks but that’s going to take some engineering because the part has been long discontinued and it looks like mine isn’t working.

That is what I thought, the computer doesn't adjust the IAC to compensate for the compressor load ?

It does. There’s a vsv that gets switched when it senses the AC turned on. That then powers a small plunger via a diaphragm that pushes on the throttle blade just a touch to bump the idle. However, it looks like mine isn’t working and the screw it pushes against is missing. I’ve found one forum thread where someone hacked a Corolla part to make it work but I need to do a bit more investigating to see what’s up.

Gotta say, been spoiled to the availability of old Chevy parts for so long that this hunting and hacking stuff sucks.

ok so if you have a vacuum plunger that pushes the throttle then you should be able to adapt an electric one. IMG_20220424_145305.jpg

I have this one signaled by the clutch coil, when the coil has power so does this plunger

Bought my own vac pump and gauges. Put a vac on this thing for 45mins and let it set overnight. No loss. Figured out my mistake on the last time by not screwing in the plungers on the valves attached to the compressor. Got ~20oz ish in there. IMG_2993.jpeg
Keep in mind it’s a 100* in the shop and I’m running no windows or top so it’s just recirculating HOT air. So it’s running roughly 40* below ambient. I’ve got no complaints. Let’s see how tomorrow goes.

50/300 which according to a few charts I found were acceptable for the ambient temps I was working in. I have no idea the rpm’s I was running at since I have no tach but it sounded around the recommended 1500rpm.

Haven’t driven it yet. I moved it out of the garage last night and it was still blowing around 60* so that’s some good news.

I stumbled on a thread that showed a nearly direct swap for the high idle servo with the AC. Just need a t fitting for a vac line and that’s it. So $20 and hopefully that works because driving a standard with an engine that’s on the verge of stalling isn’t exactly fun.

my 1990 pup will not get cold sitting still, but moving down the road it gets really cold.

Drove it around the block. 25-30mph. Still gets down to 60* but it is still 99* outside. I’m taking the win. I’m certain a longer drive at higher speeds it would be better but not worried. Much over 30mph you can’t feel the air blowing from the vents with the windows down anyways haha. Gotta love 35yr old stuff.

Found rust on the driver side I wasn’t expecting. Got the passenger side wire wheeled and it’s not as bad as I thought. The orange glue makes it look worse than it is but it’s still definitely there. Gonna wire wheel this one and then por 15 it or something on both sides before I put the new carpet in it.

On that note, I’ve made the decision to sell this thing once I deal with these items. I’ve had to reevaluate a few things lately and I can’t afford in time or money to have two older vehicles that need constant attention. The dream for this was to get it working again for Mark but he passed before that happened. Now the dream is to get it stable and pass it either back to his family so they can enjoy it or find a seller who can spend the time on it. It really is a good truck and in good shape. I need to focus my efforts back on my blazer which was my goal a year ago. It doesn’t need much but it needs enough that the 4Runner has become a distraction.

Probably at one time given the water damage haha. Found a couple of holes in the floor board up by that seam. Pain in the butt spot to fix but it’ll be covered by carpet so not so bad. I need to pop the trim off the windshield and see if that’s where it’s coming in. Pretty common spot.
