1990 K5 Build ( Ol' Blue ) : Rocker rust...

I was also impressed by the SM465, power mirror combo.

Need to get a stock steering wheel for it.

Martin

Yes i very much do, Me and rene talked about pulling it already. it seems my entire column has been changed, no cruise control options on it and i have all the cruise control options under the hood. ( that stuffs gotta get ripped out ).. ill save that for a time when i dont have new parts on hand.. that might be awhile:haha:

I got these goodies in the mail yesterday

I am going to attempt to tackle my rear tailgate window next, My current transmission cable is sheared off and loose from the motor. It also wont thread back onto it so its shot. The motor makes noise when the switch is pulled so im not sure if its good or not but i figured id Switch it out and try and clean up and fix the old one as a back up. I also ordered new inner and outter window seals to prevent the water from destroying my tailgate more than it already is.

tailgate mess

There is a whole LOT of water contamination in here. The backing plate inside that all the components bolt to, has deteriorated half way down.. Hoping theres enough left of it for it to hold until a new tailgate can be had.
In the meantime i will clean out the drain holes and hope that i can finally get this open and inspect my tail pan and other areas im not sure about yet....

The other odd thing with this truck is the inspection panel has rusted right around the bottom.. but where the floor is is not oin terrible shape.. Im not sure how or why this happened besides having a swimming pool trapped in the tailgate..:doah:

tailghate cover mess

Heres to hoping i wont need to buy a whole bedside like tRustyk5 just to patch this truck:haha:

If anyone knows of hard plastic remakes of these covers or anywhere that would have them and they arent an arm and a leg to ship, I would gladly appreciate it!:D

Turns out i ordered the wrong motor, so until then i will be tinkering with other stuff and will let you guys know whats going on:doah::doah::doah::doah::doah:

At least your column is tilt Nick. The cruise ain't such a big deal, the delay wipers are nice to have though. We'll have a look at the wiring at the bottom of the column and compare to mine, might just be able to swap a delay/cruise stalk onto your column and plug it in. Then add a good 4 spoke wheel and move on... :waytogo:

As for the party table, I definitely have to get you to sign it. :pimp:

Don't think such an animal exists. The rusted area is all flat, should be easy enough to fix.

As i posted earlier i ordered the wrong window motor...:doah:after getting quite discouraged i went and had a smoke and thought to myself my motor may be dirty and gross but still making noise. So i hooked up the new cable
new cable
AAANd the window went down!
window open

I was so happy to see it move, the previous owner had never opened it, so it was quite the crap shoot to see if it was seized or not.. but judging by the cable being shot i hoped that was the reason. The motor works quite well actually, no loud noises or shuttering, it is a bit stressfull on the truck sometimes as i do have a draw somewhere and im only getting about 9-13V, 13 if its a good day
WIRE DISASTER

( thatll be another part of the thread...) or it wont be if i just pay someone to rip it all out n make it stock again.
anywho

So i got the window open, now it was time to try and see if the tailgate opened.. It didnt. I had read about the safety switch for the window and tailgate scenario.. with not too much luck i finally got a little rougher pushing the metal down and got the safety to engage on both sides.. Then i opened the tail gate... It sounded like the titanic was sinking.:doah:
It took quite a bit of effort to get it down but once i was down i was happy to see that my tail pan wasnt absolutely messed up, just the typical amount you would expect.

once it was down i started immediately ripping up carpet, like a good k5 owner should.
ripping up carpet

I got out a can of white lithium grease and sprayed it in the hinges and worked the tailgate up and down for about 15 minutes, applying more grease as i went along. I finally got it to go up and down without much noise or resistance, its still a little stiff getting it to latch fully shut but thats fine with me:pimp:.

Once i got the carpet out i decided to take a look at the bed floor, that metal tab that ran along the seem of the carpet at the tailgate had a bunch of stripped screws. So i set the phillips in the screw with a hammer and they all came out except one that took some rusty metal with it. I dont know how anyone thought all these layers of crap were a good idea...:dunno:

tailgate finally OPEN
tailgate clean!
trruck bed clean

Once i had it cleaned up i tackled the outer window seal which came from LMC, I did order and inside one too, but im not too fond of the tab system they come with and i also noticed my inside one was in decent shape.
little ****ty tabs

The little recessed holes the tabs sit in were quite rusty, but i did my best.. Only broke one of them.. but i got it back in and in the meantime i noticed the "new" maco crap paint job coming off at the window seal, and it looks like they didnt even use primer... They painted every bit of trim and even my gas cap... I really wish i could find that missile for the previous owner...

After i got the bed cleaned up and vacuumed, i decided to install the new front lights i also got from LMC. The daytime running lights on mine were very foggy and burnt up, they had white bulbs in them also so they didnt do much. These are the new ones compared to the old.
new light compared to old
And they came with amber bulbs that i ordered which was a good combo.
new bulbs

So with a few bolts and some screws i got the grill and lights off.. for some reason there was 2 torx bit screws holing the light part of the grill on... made me a bit loopy having to dig out 3 screw drivers to get the grill off but it came off. and the new bulbs and lights went on as easy as the old ones came off.
nw lights installed2

Im glad they finally look how they are supposed to, Next ones will be the side turning lights as they look tinted.. or some stupid crap like that..:haha:

Dang son, you've been busy today!

Tailpan/rear floor doesn't look bad. A bit better than mine for sure. :waytogo:

Glad to see you got the tailgate to actually open too. Just noticed you're missing a tailgate support strap on the passenger side too.

Yea i noticed that too, not sure where i can get one, my existing one looks like **** too, probably easy enough to make. It was such a releif to have it open and the rust search could continue. Plus now i know i can have my top off in moab this year!!

Also im going to order up a prop valve and those SS brake lines, you want a set also for your front and rear? Maybe ill wait until we meet up and then you can help me with the inline tube stuff also, i found SS brake lines for 81-87 and a prop valve for the same year. Id like to take a look at yours too because i may need to change out front to back to make the prop valve work, depending on the current 90 set up

Hey Nick looks like a nice truck
Your making good progress with it and in great company with Rene' close by!
I had cudtom brakelines made from G&J aircraft
Very reasonably priced and very high quality too!

Thanks zimmer! Ive been hornyer than ever now to get this project going and having rene close by is great motivation because having the same trucks, its great to work on either! Thanks for the link i will look into it when im not on my phone, the lines that rene got from inline tube seem real nice and quality fit, ill compare costs and see what the best plan is. I ordered the SS front and rears from ORD so id like to make a decision quick so i can put it all back in at the same time and eliminate my ABS that does nothing...

Thanks bowtie 85! I love the sm465.. Lots of people seem to dislike the low gearing and shift speed but i like it. I have a few minor issues with mine but im going to take the PTO covers off and change the oil and see if i can see anything, im having some issues shifting into L and R, mainly L. But i am planning a rebuild on it at some point for piece of mind.

Thats a good price zimmer, i will definitely look into those.

Today its snowing and 0 degrees which is odd but lets just say theres quite a bit of mud, being my birthday and all i figured it was a good day to go bombing around work in my k5. So i get to work and see a big muddy road on the way to my crane so i stop, turn my hubs, and throw it into 4H... No light comes on.. So i try again, same thing.. I figure i can try and tackle it in 2H.. I get about half way before the alberta clay takes my tire and turns it into a racing slick. I stop and put it into 4H, no light but i try it anyway. It seems to be working but no dash light.. Is there anyone whos had this issue or can lead me in the right direction of testing the light or connection. It worked in the winter when i got the truck, and i dont mind it not coming on but when going back into 2H and hitting asphalt id like to know its not in 4H anymore... Any help would be appreciated
