1990 K5 Build ( Ol' Blue ) : Rocker rust...

My 83 has always been stubborn going into low, usually a quick rev or shifting it into first than into Low works. As much as i hate the sm465 I love it, Max02 let me drive the rattbag. Ive never rowed gears in a sm465 like that, it shifts like butter compared to mine.

Possible you knocked the connector of the tcase for the light? or the bulb burnt out? couple easy checks I can think of off the top of my head.

Yea i may have jumped the gun by posting, i have new t10 led bulbs i am going to replace mine with and also check the connection at the tcase. Which fuse would it be labelled as, or would it be the same for the whole cluster? If the electrical connection was bad , the 4x4 would still work right, as its not engaged electronically?

Yeah the light is just an indicator, has nothing to do with the actual function of the 4x4.

Awesome thanks! I had an electronic engauged 4x4 in my last vehicle and was so annoying. Glad i sold that ford and bought a k5!!

A 90k5 holds a special place in my heart! Good looking truck, keep the updates coming.

Thanks bowtie 85! I love the sm465.. Lots of people seem to dislike the low gearing and shift speed but i like it. I have a few minor issues with mine but im going to take the PTO covers off and change the oil and see if i can see anything, im having some issues shifting into L and R, mainly L. But i am planning a rebuild on it at some point for piece of mind.

Thats a good price zimmer, i will definitely look into those.

Today its snowing and 0 degrees which is odd but lets just say theres quite a bit of mud, being my birthday and all i figured it was a good day to go bombing around work in my k5. So i get to work and see a big muddy road on the way to my crane so i stop, turn my hubs, and throw it into 4H... No light comes on.. So i try again, same thing.. I figure i can try and tackle it in 2H.. I get about half way before the alberta clay takes my tire and turns it into a racing slick. I stop and put it into 4H, no light but i try it anyway. It seems to be working but no dash light.. Is there anyone whos had this issue or can lead me in the right direction of testing the light or connection. It worked in the winter when i got the truck, and i dont mind it not coming on but when going back into 2H and hitting asphalt id like to know its not in 4H anymore... Any help would be appreciated

Hey happy birthday Man!

Yeah probably something simple like the bulb or wiring. Good luck!

Shifts even better after I welded up the shifter! :thumb:

Welded up the shifter?? And yea low is the only gear that is stubborn for me, i will try those little tricks and see what works

If you have a manual transmission with which you have a love-hate relationship because of a sloppy shifter, open it up and start sticking metal together like a 3rd grader with a hot glue gun. You’ll be thrilled at the improved shifting and can then happily get back to smashing your rig into rocks!

Haha thanks for the link, i may just venture down that road when i get a mig welder, i see one in the near future. Did your welds break like his?

:haha:
The one in my truck did have broken welds, I have anouther one that is good and solid but it isn't chrome. So I welded up my chrome one....helped a lot!

Cool build. I'm happy to see someone so enthused about K5s!

Also L and R are unsyncronised in the SM465, as in it should be hard to get into those gears. If it doesn't go at first attempt, double clutch it and try again. Worked every time for me. The loose shifter is just how these things are. At the bottom of the shifter there are factory tack welds that often crack and break creating more slop. A few quick tack welds and it'll help clean it up some.
Honestly, I wouldn't try to rebuild the 465 unless it was actually giving you trouble. Its a brutally simple transmission that just needs clean gear oil and should continue to provide years of trouble free service. Plus for the cost of rebuilding it, you'd be pretty close to the cost of an NV4500 swap which gets you a much better shifting and overdrive.

As for the 4wd indicator light, a lot of times the switch goes bad on the t-case. Which is cheap and easy to replace. (but for good measure I'd check the light bulb first :doah: )

No updates Nick? Sheesh, ya get a weekend off (:flipoff7:) and nothing? I dunno about the younger generation anymore... :haha:

I have the weekend off but it hasn't been the most pleasant, due to jack daniels making a hard and long appearance. I will try and get the bulbs in tomorrow. The ORD brake lines are scheduled for monday, in the time being i have been slacking on ordering the lines from inline tube.. Once those things start showing up i can get back to work on it, Its hard to keep up when i get everything done in a few days that i can, and I'm stuck waiting on parts.

Good having you over tonight...sometimes it's good to just sit around a fire and BS.

The waiting for parts is annoying, but it's a hobby not a job. If it all got done in a week we'd have to go wheelin or something equally horrible.

Ive bee a bit absent lately but with life throwing curve balls and trying to find a new house with a garage has kept me busy. I have just ordered new brake SS lines front to rear along with SS fuel lines. I have received the ORD brake lines

Im hoping the SS lines dont take too long so i can do the whole shot and eliminate my ABS and i am also ordering a new prop valve to relocate into the front crossmember.

In the meantime i having been spending a lot of my time at tRustyK5s place helping him with his and soaking as much knowledge into the brain as possible. He has been nice enough to teach me about metal fab and welding as we talk about my future rust repairs. i had never welded before but always wanted to,i have been working with my hands my whole life and think itll be my best friend with a k5 project. He let me do a bit yesterday for my first time. This was the second bead i ran with MIG on a piece of tail pipe

first weld

He let me weld his exhaust pipe together after.. im glad i dont have a photo of it but i am glad i got to weld something together. I cant wait to get a welder n start going at it.:woot:

The other day i was showing him a local junkyard and ironically enough on the way in i was mentioning now, every time im at the junkyard, im staring at axles to find 14 bolts or d60s.. after showing him the chevy section. Dont know which one of us spotted it but there it was.

Was nice that it was up on a rack and the tires off. Thats not the norm at this place.

I had purchased a battery op grinder but it has never occurred to me that the place would end up as a forest fire if they allowed grinders in here.So i exchanged it for a sawsall and some metal blades. I got the shock bolts off and cut the ubolts with the sawzall, being on a bit of a budget right now i had to go to the truck and charge the battery once.. :doah:

I had a friend that was supposed to come but he was tied up, so it was a bit challenging but oh well, the power of the k5 gods helped me along the way. Took it over to renes as we were going to pressure wash it. and he would take a look inside for me to see if he saw anything i wouldnt notice.

Its in good shape and no gov lock in there, which is good because i plan on locking this rear.

3.73s and open. 65" WMS to WMS. A second possibility for Nick would be to convert this to 6 lug and te-gear the front yo match. Would save a lot on rims and tires which he just bought.
