1990 K5 Build ( Ol' Blue ) : Rocker rust...

That is a good idea, hmmm.. The posibilities are endless. Ill have to put some serious thought into it.

Check with skinny jeans(Deuling), he cut me a set of spacers for my 8 lug 14 bolt I eventually plan on doing the 6 lug swap.

Is there an downfall to doing the conversion? strength wise or anything? Is there a disk brake conversion for the SF? its hard to look down the road into the near future and try and plan. Im just trying to make it to MOAB this year, even if its on stock stuff. NO point messing with whats working for now.

The things i need to get done before MOAB is front driveshaft retubed, Front and rear differentials checked over ( and get the ugly paint off my ten bolt covers ) Brake and fuel lines front to rear, i have a new tank and pump assembly already in so the entire fuel system will be new, along with brakes right from the booster all in stainless.:woot:

The only reason I would ever bother to swap in a semi floating 14 bolt would be to run 6 lug wheels.

I have a 14 bolt sitting there with 373s, a d44 with flattops that needs outers. It's an obvious upgrade over the 3:07 gears in my truck right now.

No down fall strength wise, 6 lug axles are the same.

I think converting to 6 lug makes the most sense where you're at with the truck right now. It's a big upgrade over the 10 bolt rear and lets you keep and enjoy the new rims and tires for a while.

I think I'd stay drum rear brakes too. KISS.

Re-gear front to match, add a lock rite to the 14. Wheel it.

Doing a 6 lug swap isn't hard, its just knowing exactly what parts to get.

Hey Nick, your in good hands here with this dude!

One of my favorite pics

10 bolt shaft next to a SF 14. It's a good axle. I wouldn't put one in a truck I hauled with alot but in a blazer I think it's a great axle.

my 99 has that axle in it....230K mi and no problems towing a 7K camper and it hauled the Maiden to Moab and back no issues....even with G80!
Russells Tahoe has that axle in it behind a Dirtymax as well.

Thanks for all the input guys, what are good gears to buy and how much are they usually, not sure if i want to spend the money on regearing the front to match and do the conversion or park it for the winter and find a d60 for up front.. oh the addiction is growing. I have to stop reading Gregs thread..:haha:

Thanks for the photo, that gives me a good amount of reassurance in the SF 14 bolt that i have kinda been getting slack about, since its not a FF. I do not plan to go over 37 inch tires, and ive been told theres some very solid axle shafts made for the SF that would handle 37s all day long. I would like to preserve the rims and tires i just bought but if the price of gears and a conversion kit are close then not sure which is better..

i got approved for a house to rent with a "double" car garage, so im focusing on the move for the most part right now.

Once i move in i will tackle the fuel and brake lines. Clean up that SF as best as possible for now, and rebuild it over winter while bluey is parked for the rusty season. I also got some other good winter projects i can do with a garage. It should be a good one! the suns barely up here in the winter so might aswell stay in the garage drinking beer and bribing tRusty with rum to venture on over and give me a hand...

Hey Nick, your in good hands here with this dude!

And i very much am in good hands. Feel very privileged to have met someone willing to share the k5 love with.

I wheel the hell out of my semifloat and I havent had any issues yet. Locked in the rear too. As is Richcz28

If I had it to do again, and I was going to stay 6 lug. I'd convert a FF.

FF is king if you're comparing strength. However it gives up 1.5" of ground clearance to the SF. An SF with 37's has more ground clearance than a FF on 39.5's. The FF can be surgically altered, 13 bolt cover blah blah blah...but for a rig staying 37" and under and not running KOH the SF is a better choice IMNSHO.

That is the thinking and the build focus here. Nick isn't building a rock bouncer, or on the fast track to having a trailered truggy.

If he can find a decent 60 in the next year, it will be a burly multi purpose rig that is still full bodied, yet capable. :waytogo:

Exact reason I went SF in the Jimmy. No need for a full float. Will stay 38s or under. Never really haul heavy loads. No point in a ff for me. Also I got mine for a great price

Not to derail this thread, (which is friggen cool BTW), but what is a good price for a SF 14 bolt? There's a guy here in town that wants $200 for a 6 lug, SF 14 bolt out of a mid 90's truck. I've been contemplating getting it for my Suburban but I don't want to pay too much for it.
