1990 K5 Build ( Ol' Blue ) : Rocker rust...

IMG_20171117_170337.jpg

It's like a rave is going on in my dash.... :weld: so tacky but it's better than nothing. The one white bulb I had makes the centre look teal... FFS. I have eliminated all the tabs and bulbs that don't work through testing though so all I need to do now is buy white bulbs and change em out.

Also went and picked up these knuckles for the cross over. I had to get both because of the tie rod taper being opposite on this knuckle to my current ten bolt knuckle. Now to accumulate the rest of the parts so I can get this knuckle machined

Also very glad theres only one cone washer to get out.. it's mangled already...

ORD's stuff is top shelf...that being said NWF is just up the road from you in Qualicum. Go see Kyle there, he'll get you set up and could probably do the knuckle machining too.

I totally forgot about nwf being so close. I did some digging and it looks like they sell hi steer components so I'm going to give them a call and see if I can drop off the knuckle and pick up everything else I need when they are done. I'm potentially going to have a driveway for a couple months and also a backyard to work on stuff coming up in January. The plan is to get the crossover steering done. Sand down the fenders I have in storage, trim them, and paint to install. Fix door damage, sand, paint and install. And also do the rear inner and outer quarters. That will get a ton of stuff out of storage and onto my truck to save me money. It'll also knock one more rust location off the list. The tail pan will be the next fix after. Thinking I may do a 1 inch body lift while I'm at it since I have to remove the body mounts in the rear anyway I believe when I redo the tailpan. Anyway that's the plan for now!

One thing I am wondering while looking at these knuckles and mine is that it appears the tie rod being on top of the knuckle arm ( reverse taper to current stock position ) is that it'll look really tight to the underside of the spring. I'm wondering if anyone has used these old d44 knuckles before and if the arm on them may be located lower than the stock set up, to accommodate the tie rod being on top. I also tracked down a steering box box with the o rig type fittings. I believe this is the one I want as the double flare steering boxes are older, pre 80' from what I've read. I don't want to get these machined and find out I cant run a tie rod.. I know on the ORD site is says if you get these older style knuckles you'll need both. So I'm assuming it all fits well after install or they wouldn't even suggest getting these, just curious that's all.

Any input would be great

I have a set but haven't ever looked into installing them yet. They should clear fine though since the axle they came off of came in trucks with the same suspension I would imagine.

My thoughts also, just picking the brains of the gurus before I pay for the kit and to have this machined.

Lots of help, the arm must be lower on the knuckle because the gap appears to be the same. Thanks @Bent77 !

Wasn’t sure what else you needed, so if you have questions, be obvious. I’m kinda daft (known Rene too long?)

use heat, they pop right out. I use to beat the shit out of them until I learned they will fall off with some heat.

I'll torch it before trying to pop it out!

On the other hand I ran into some hub problems today. One tried to self destruct or fails due to improper maintenance... *DOH, so I'm hoping a service kit will be all that I need to get it back together. I appears alot of it is still in good shape but it appears the service kits only come with o ring and the snap ring and fastener bolts.. all of which are okay on mine...

I also think I may have a spare tub of hub stuff because I replaced my older ones with these.. maybe I'll try and dig that out in the next few days from storage.

Upon further inspection I think it's fubar.. hopefully I find one locally.

Shop up island will have the crossover kit made up and machine the knuckle. Going to hopefully do that and repair the hub later this month/beginning of December.

I don't think it's supposed to come apart like that haha lesson learned, must service hubs more often when wheeling...

I found a set for 60 bucks locally. Two caps ( which seem to be a different set up that engages the sliding gear ) but look identical from the outside so it's a good match. With the two caps and 3 internal working pieces I should be okay. I don't think the caps will fail much so at least I have spares now.

Also went to get the 2wd steering box and stumbled upon a graveyard of square body parts and also a really cool guy around my age who shares the same addiction. After shooting the shit with him about squares for 2 hours he just gave me the 2wd box. Free parts and a wheeling buddy.. winning! Out of all the communities I've ever been a part of or observed at least, the squarebody community tends to be so good damn nice and cool! Must be something about simple sexy trucks that attracts simple cool people. Only thing left is to have the knuckle machined and the kit made with a measurement or two.

When did you fukk up the pass fender? And tweak the bumper?

Have you had your eyes checked lately?

That's not new at all. Happened before the driver side fender. A tree did the bumper damage also. That was from when I first moved here. Just noticing it now!? Maybe we both need glasses
