1992 454 swap into a 86. (now changed to a 496)

awsome thanks!! the more I save on the motor the faster I can put the lift in. Only need like $900 to finish ordering the 6" tuff country, so if I can squeeze that in to my budget now I dont have to wait to sell the spare parts.

About rebuilding the engine, if your mind is set on a rebuild i HIGHLY suggest you keep the same compression ratio (DO NOT use a domed piston or any other piston that would raise the CR). An engine that is used in a truck application for towing or hauling a load needs to have a lower CR to keep the engine from detonating and destroying itself. :deal: I cannot stress this enough, some people will listen to me and others will argue with me but i am telling you from years of experience building engines.

I agree. Mine is 7.8 to one and runs hard.

for sure, I caught myself on that one too, plan to just use the stockers if I can. The way I see it the cubic inches is where most of the torque comes from and compression wont really do much for me since I am not looking for a lot of horse power. I agree with you guys 100%. I was really getting ahead of myself in this build and was loosing sight of the target, I am still thinking of the 454 I built for my 69 ElCamino.

So re doing my budget I am getting cheap, well sorta?

Anyway I am starting to think maybe not rebuild it, just throw the new intake, carb, and headders on it and call it good. After getting all the extras to complete the install I would still have enough to put the lift kit on and mount the tires, any drive shaft work and the radio and junk.

If I do the full rebuild I will have to sell the blazer to get the lift and other stuff.....Hmm not sure what to do at this point but I think I am leanin toward just runnin it like it is, then rebuild it a few years down the road.

According to the guy I am buying it from it was running great, and I think I can trust what he says. Worst case I get it in and it takes a crap and have to pull it again, not like it's the end of the world right??

You could always hook up the starter and do a compression test BEFORE you do anything to the engine. If the compression test shows to be good then i would not do anything to the engine other than install it and run it.

Another thought to consider is that you can purchase and install a modern 6.0L with less than 100k on it which will produce more horsepower and torque than the 454 will slightly hopped up, all the while keeping weight down and getting better fuel economy to boot, for around $3000 or so. If you buy the 454 for $900 bucks, and drop 2k into rebuilding it / building it up a bit, the 6.0L might make some sense :)

Unless, of course, you just drop the 454 in as is, then the 454 is a lot cheaper & a bit easier to install

yep after talkin more with the guy today when I picked it up I think I am just gonna strip all the TBI stuff off and put the new edelbrock intake on it and my current HEI the Q-jet from Jet performance hook up the letric fuel pump and go for it.

Yeah, but for that cost (or somewhere close), the 454 would be rebuilt while the 6.0 would not ;)

At first I was going to say it would be worth it to keep the FI, but then I realized that it's a TBI and not Vortec, which, in my mind is basically a glorified carb, swapping to a carb would be much easier. All in all, you got a niceproject coming along, I wish I could get one going for me.

:D just got off the phone with Jet and they are ahead of schedule, my carb is done and will ship tomorrow or monday!!!:D

so could not resist tearing into this project. It is stillin hte back of the burb so couldnt do to much but I pulled all the pullys and brackets off then the exhaust manifolds. And dont it figure the rear bole on each side it broke in the head >:( thats gonna be fun to try and fix, hope it goes well but if not and I got to pull the heads to take to machine shop I guess I will rebuild it. Anywaya couple pics of it.

nice aluminum valve covers with some of the grime cleaned off.

overall rockers and pushrods look purdy good. cant wait to pull the intake and see the lifter valley. that will tell me a lot of the story, and I will also pull the Pan to paint it and inspect the crank and rods. Hope it all looks good and wont require a rebuild, need to save the cash for the lift and any of the nickle dime stuff that is gonna pop up when I go to put it in.

well it 2 AM and I got a lot done on it today but still have a long way to go. The good news is the engine seems to be in great shape, no sludge or gunk in it and I popped the oil pan and you can still see cross hatching in the cylinders!! So I am just gonna button it all back up and run it like it is. Sorr dont have more pice but I got excited and just went to town on it. The down side is the new intake wont take one of the brakets so will need to modify that but dont think it will be too bad.

it came out of the back realeasy to so that was a plus. Still got more parts on the way and I am not sure if the oil filter will work with the headders so might have to change the adapter on the block to make it straight down. Also the 4L80E torque converter take 6 bolts so not sure if I can swap it into the TH400 or if I will need to just put the tranny in now? Oh well moe on that tomorrow.

so looking over my budget thismorning for waht I got let to work with and figued how much I have spent so far. So buying the burban, the 5 military OZ tires 37x12.5, wheels, 454 big block, 4L80E trans, 800CFM q-Jet from jet perf, edelbrock intake, headders, electric fuel pump, pressure regulator, gaskets and an assortment of other junk.......................................................I have a grand total of $4589.35 tied up in it so far. Not to bad huh, I havent even started selling the old parts yet, anybody need a good running 350!! Of course it's like and odometer and it is still clickin up, got a long ways to go still.

got her buttoned up today, still need to clean and paint the valve covers and set TDC so I can stab the distributor. GUess she is about read to go in now, still need to figure out the torque converter, not sure if the turbo 400 converter will bolt up to the flexplate or not so it will either be buy a new flex plate or converter which ever is cheaper since it is only temporay untill I put the lift on and get all the stuff for the 4L80E.

got the headders today, but forgot about easter so this is how it's gonna sit untill next weekend :'( oh well such is life, it gives me time to play it out in my head more anyway.

Also decided to just throw the 4L80Ein now and will get the lift later. Should work out good since the 80E is about 2 inches longer than the 400 so with the 6" lift the drive shaft should be just right!!

so not sure what to do now, lots of issues running through my head. Guess I will start with what I know for sure, the 454 is going in the burban, the 4L80E is goin in, electric fuel pump is goin in. Now some issues, the headers might not fit, the fuel pressure regulator I got might not be what I really need, not sure the NP208 is gonna bolt up to the tranny, the plug wires I got are already cut to length, and I wont have enough left over to do the lift.
So let me rant about the plg wires!!! *&^%$ m)(*&^%ucker why in the **** would accel make plug wires that are universal and not put the distributor boots on, but pre cut the dam wires? I am so pissed about this, I wanted to custom fit my wires to the exact correct lenght for how I want to route them, it may work out fine but WTF. They are different lengths and some look really short to me and they pre stripped them too, so if they did all that to them why not just put the boots on and call it good..........Just not what I was expecting to get when I opened the box, I figured they would all be fairly long so you can cut them shorter to fit just right, not screw around trying to find a lenght that is gonna be close and screw with that. Just burns my ass........
now for the heders, they didnt offer them for a GEN V block for my year, so I picked the ones for an 88 thinking the frame and stuf is not that different....I may be very wrong un fortunatly wont find out until I stick the 454 in.
the fuel pump say to mount it below the tank.....well pretty much impossible in a suburban since the tank is below the frame for the most part so not sure how well it's gonna work? The regulator I got is a bypass return style so I guess if it get over 4-7 PSI it send the extra back tot the tank. So there are two line going to the mechanical pump on the small block a 3/8 (the supply line) and a 1/4 (prolly the vent line, I am thinking I can just hook the return to the 1/4" line, guess I will try that and see how it works. Has anybody else hooked up an electric pum that can give advise? (a no I cant keep the mechanical pump cause the GEN V block is not machined for one so have to go electric)
Also decided to do the swap at my buddies house so I can use his garage in case it rains, plus he has air tools! Any way he is tryin to talk me into taking the front core support out to make it easy to stab the engine with the tranny hooked up and prolly the t-case. dont have a tranny jack and the the 4L80E is about 2 inches longer than the TH400 and maybe another 80-100 Lbs heavier? so sounds like a good idea right, hook all the powertrain together and stab it all at once with the front off so easy access and dont have to lift very high. The plus side of this it lets me check the t-case fit before I am under the truck, so could swap the TH400 on easy at that point if I need to.
Last thing the lift. Do I really want to lift it? I will never wheel it hard or rock climb it or go through deep mud, sand it's man purpose is daily driver and to pull the camper so is a lift really needed......I could just trim the fenders a little bit and keep runnin the 33's without doing anything, then spend the 1000 bucks to put all new bushings and ball joints and tie rods and brake lines and u-joints in it then get it alligned........................but I really want the lift, it just looks so good, and I already got a set of 37's waitin to be put on.

Like I said a lot to stew on, oh and I got to get a tranny cooler and was thinkin a remote filter at the same time, and since I am doing the overhead console and got to pull the compass/clock/temp display out of it since I dont have all the sensors and crap I was thinking of getting a doulbe or tripple gauge cluster to put in there. So what ya think..tranny temp, oil temp or tranny temp and two other gauges (and which ones?)
Ok sorry for the long post and thanks for any input or ideas.
