1992 454 swap into a 86. (now changed to a 496)

prolly gonna regret it but no. I never pulled it off the tranny so it should still have enough in it, but I also read that they tend to drain bak on the 4l80E, after it was all in of course. I blame all that on being in a rush while it was at my buddies house, I had fully intended on pullin it off and drainin it out and re fill it, but one thing led to another and suddenly it was back in the truck and the tranny was bolted up:doah:

I'll find out soon I guess, should be startin it by 1 or 2 tomorrow.

If it had oil in it before, and it wasn't tipped upsidedown, it should be ok. I don't know how the oil in the convertor could all drain back into the pan anyway. Only 1/2 maybe.

You will soon learn that aluminum and plastic radiators are junk. They don't like heat or vibration. I can't even count how many of those I have seen with a split tank from the heat that builds under the hood and they aren't repairable.

However many you have seen, there have been just as many leaky copper/brass units I'll bet;)

True, you can't repair a cracked plastic tank, but lately there are just about zero radiator shops left anyway. One of the best known radiator shops here in town recently closed their doors, not sure if there's any more left in the area.

Well now I'm really curious, is radiator repair still common in your area?

I still have a least 3 to choose from in the Kzoo area.

I am really starting to hate electric fuel pumps!! So the first time I turned it on gas poured out the top of the carb then quit, cool every thing was doing great. Well the fancy little summit guage started dropping pressure while the engine was running, it went all the way to zero but the engine kept running just fine. I figured it must have crapped out so oh well it was running fine, the next time I started it the guage jumps up to 6 PSI and held it the whole time?
Well today was gonna set the timing and go to start it and a gusher is coming out the carb, the guage shows 4 psi now. well **** now what. I go get my pressure guage out the shed and hook it to the pressure regulator and it goes up to 8.5 psi and holds there. OK just need to adjust the regulator and the summitguage is crap, but wait it gets better, I start adjusting the regulator and nothing it wont go up or down it holds 8.5 untill I turn it off and it drops to zero.
Huh what the hell two bad parts???? Well I have the holley bypass regulator lets give that a shot, same thing it sorta adjust but then nothing, no fuel to the carb at all, seems the pump went nuts. good this is pissing me off.

thats as far as I got cause now I got to feed the dang kids, guess I will be workin in the dark later, I got to check pressure at the pump next.

at least I got the shroud adjusted and it seems the fandont rub anymore, too bad it floods, kils the battery and wont start so I can see if it rubs when running. Oh and it's getting late so cant start it anyway to set the timing even if I get it figured out cause it is just too loud.

yep!

so messed with it again, went out and it started righ up, held 6.5 PSI on the summit guage? So set the timing and started fooling with the idle, started having problem with that and noticed no pressure again and it died soon after that, but fuel was still in the clear filter. pump still going pulled the line off the outlet of the holley regulator and no gas comes out. I then pulled the line feeding the regulator and plenty of gas porued out...

shut off the pump and put the good guage on the supply line and it was at 8 psi, so I let it run for about 5 min and it dropped to 6 and started surging between 6 and 7. I am letting the pump cool good now and will check it again.

could it be a problem with my summit fuel pump? and both regulators are bad and the summit guage? Dang this sucks! But on the plus side the fan doesnt rub the shroud anymore and I got to hear it run for about 5 min:D

so figured it out, both pressure regulators are junk!!! took apart the summit one and the spring on the diagphram was too big and kept the check ball down, i took it out and couldnt blow air through it. So i cut the spring down and it seemed to work then with me blowing air it worked just right, so put it in the truck and wallah, 8 psi......son of a B. pulled the top off to make sure no pressure on the check ball and it let no fuel through just long enough for me to get a look at the ball and kapow it squirts gas in my eye! Doubble son of B! So after running inside and washing my eye out I went back out and cut the spring again, and sure enough it leaks still, I can move the spring around so no tension on the check ball or diaphram but still get 8 psi. It did sorta work for a few seconds then quit again. The holley did the same thing cant adjust it eithr way to get low pressure so I think I need to hook up the bypass line for it to work right...
Screw it I am gonna see if I can find a regulator that works right first. I am goin to bed now, got to be in to work early.

:mad::mad: still just mad! got off the phone with summit and I have a new regulator on the way, $95.00 later, getting a mallory brand this time and it looks like way better design, summit is paying next day air to make me feel better and I can send the other two regulators back for a refund so not too bad....................as long as it works!!

So after work I will start work on trying to get the tranny programed.....be ready to get another rant :wink1:

:D:D:D:D:D:D:bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Oh it is so cool to hook your truck to your laptop and see what is going on, what gear it's in, throttle position, tranny line pressure, tranny temp, RPM, charging voltage, and thats just what I have figured out so far!! I got the fuel regulator as you prolly guessed and got the laptop to talk to the tranny ECU and that is all the crap it tells me so far.............ohhhhhh mmaaaannnnnn..............I am very happy right now!! Got to stop workin on it for now but all I got to do is put the shifter in and figure the exhaust ous and take it for a drive. Oh feels so good.

its nice when things go right isn't it?

sure is! I hope it starys that way, I havent drove it yet???

went for a test ride, I like it so far, need to adjust the line pressue and shift point a little but it works!!! Still need to do the exhaust so I can take it for a real drive but the first run was promising.

holy crap this is so cool!! I can put a shift kit in my tranny with the click of a mouse, I set it to shift hard and boy did it I could swear it lifted the front off the ground from 1st to 2nd in wide open throttle. Still need to monkey with the normal driving shift tables but WOT is awsome, it's a little slow to kick down a gear when I put it on the floor but when it does the burban takes off hauls AZZ and shift nice and hard [congrats] I am loving messing with this TCU I can go mild to wild shift kit just by changing a few numbers.

Success, got it sorted out this morning, not sure what I did or how but it shifted just right and did what it was supposed to do. I drove the burban to work and she runs 2700 RPM at 80 MPH with 33's and 4.10 gears, I hit a max speed of 93 and it was smooth as silk the whole time. I tweaked the force tables a little when I got to work and will upload that before I go home and see how the "shift kit" feels. Thinking about taking it for a 200 mile trip tomorrow and see how it does and what sorta gas milage it gets.

well total disaster today!! Decided to take the burb for 200 mile drive down to Albuquerque to see how it does, and it didn't. Made about 50 miles and the tranny seemd to start slipping, just power loss bigtime, so pulled over and popped the hood and could swear I heard the water boiling in the head!! I was thinking no way, not with the big radiator and oil cooler and tranny cooler!! But it was hot for sure, so reached down to see how hot the remote tranny filter was and it was ice cold?? hmm, so fired the laptop up and hooked in and the tranny temp was at 268 degrees!! too hot for sure, so I let it cool for a while and try it again still slipping like a bitch but grabbed enough for me to move further off the road, and to forget the hood was popped and the wind to catch it and dang near fold it back. That will need to be fixed now since it catches at the rear and wont open without a lot of messing with it.
Anyway let it cool some more and get it down to 200 degrees and try again and nothing, line pressure shows 55 PSI but in drive it goes nowhere! So start reading up and figure out how to hook up the manual shifter function, so take about half hour riggin up wires and ready to go again, well it dont move so pull it down to 1st and she goes slow and slipping then shift it to drive and use my wires to force it up some gears and it builds speed and finally hit 4th and the torque converter locks in and it appears to not be slipping now so I drive about 15 miles and it goes to slipping again and loosing speed. I pull over shift back to 1st and start again and this time make it about 20 miles before it acts up. Managed to get it home this way and it hovered around 230 degrees.
Anyway seems it is gettin way hot and has some issue with the pressure? Cant figure out how the filter stayed cold other than no fluid circulating but then how would it be able to work at all if it was not pumping?? Gonna have a hard time figuring this one out.
well on the good side drove it like that and did around 100 miles and the gas guage barely moved so it seems to get good gas milage! The bad side I was on my way to ABQ so I could catch a plane for buisness travel this morning, so after getting home at 8PM called around and no rental cars available except for a for ford focus. I am 6'5" do you think I got that clown car?? Hell no, took the wifes truck. So the bad thing is now I am at the airport and wont be home till friday to start figuring it out. Anybody got any guesses?

Your a lucky man,

searching here in germany for a 454 TBI to rebuild it all the month ago, but nothing on the market. US Ebayer do not ship to germany...............:(

So was thinkin today maybe the filter in the pan came loose and dropped down not letting the pump suck up enough fluid to hold the right pressure? I mean the pump does seem to work just real weak, so if the filter is down or clogged, the the pump would drain off the top of the pan faster than it comes back into the pan.
I drained the pan but didnt have time to pull it yet, so will do that tomorrow and see what I find. I think my guess has merit and could be the problem, but I dont think that's what I will find to be the case but who knows.
Whats your bet, loose filter or kaput?
