1992 454 swap into a 86. (now changed to a 496)

well I am no expertbut I am pretty sure this should not have been laying in the bottom of the pan?

I know that was not there when I put the pan on, and there sure aint supposed to pieces of brass in the pan or all the sludge either. So yeah it's kaput!

and the filter was right where it was supposed to be.

a snap ring for a piston spring retainer?
Don't remember any brass in there though....maybe a thrust washer or bushing material?

could be it was really brittle sorta like plastic? the metal shavins and brass looks like bushing material or maybe the clutches. Anyway gotta pull it and get another one. Still all up after selling the other motor and trans I got a 454 for $450 bucks that works just fine.

well three months later and nothing done:D

I have decided to scrap the whole 4L80E plan, just dont have the cash. So the new plan is to pull the TH400 out of the blazer and put it behind the 454.

Anybody wanna buy a TCI tranny control unit, harness, and TPS remote sensor?

Damn man. That was not the happy ending to the story i was hoping for after reading 13 pages.

Put a damper on my honeymoon.

:haha:sorry to drag you down............but the story aint done yet, just about to get to the good part I hope.

If you still got the TCI unit.. defitently be interested in it. Might even be able to work something out.. Im going this route with my 89 3/4 ton. 454 is already in, with the th400. Sent ya a pm.

so a little update, got the TH400 put in and got it back on the road, ne wxhaust and a few other goodies. Runs really good, but pulling is another story. Took a 20' enclosed trailer to pick up a load of stuff for a friend 200 miles away and was not impressed at all! It did ok but not much better than a mild built 350 would do, it actually strugled a few times up the steep hills and that **** just wont fly.

Bad news is the lift is just gonna have to wait again, the good news is I am going back to a mark IV block .060 over, 049 heads, 4.25 crank, 6.385 rods, and a mechanical fuel pump. If you missed that it adds up to a 496 stroker. Also gonna bump the compression up to adjust for living at 6000', this should solve my towing issues! Also figured out I actually have 4.56 gears already in it, kinda sucks cause it turns about 3200 at 75 with the 33's on it, so should calm it down to 2800rpm when the 37's get on there and put around 2500rpm when towing at 65mph. So got lucky with all that part I guess, Hope to get the new engine built and put in around thaksgiving.

DID I MENTION IT A 496!!! OH YEAH PURDY HAPPY BOUT THAT!!

496...how sweet it is!
So what were those parts in the trans pan?

broken ones?? still not sure what happened.

little catch up!

well that was quick and easy!!
unhook the torque converter
S5000013-4.jpg

drop the cross member
S5000014-5.jpg

then the t-case and pull a few more bolts and wallahhh! It's out.

S5000015-5.jpg

S5000017-4.jpg

and couldnt help my self had to pull the pump just to see!
S5000018-4.jpg

whatdya know anothe piece of broken something sitting there? other than that have no idea what I am looking at.....I do know the pump dont just slide right back in easy. Oh well no big deal, now all that's left is pull the th400 out the blazer and put it in the burban!! HMMM need a break first.

well here is the operating room and new home for the blazer for a while.
S5000019-2.jpg

the problem with a 6" lift, the jack wont reach the trans! Nothing a couple blocks of wood cant fix.
S5000024-2.jpg

decided to change the filter while it was still in the blazer.
S5000021-3.jpg

S5000023-2.jpg

S5000022-4.jpg

was a little sludge but allgone now, and the fluid wasstill nice and red!
came out easy and here it is just waiting to be put in it's new home. Decided to take the transfer case with it since it was clean and painted already.
S5000025-2.jpg

Look at the pretty new torque converter peaking out.
S5000026.jpg

all bolted up, even went ahead and spaced the crossmember now to save a step when I put the lift on.
S5000027-1.jpg

I will need to get the driveshavt lengethend when I lift it. So all I got left is the cooler lines, vacum line and the electric kick down needs to be hooked up. Should be a quick day tomorrow and ready to drive!!!

well here it is $187.00 later!

Sounds a little tamer now when driving but sitting at idle it has some serious deep tone to it. Will do another video short of it after I get the timing sorted out.

got the gauges put in temp like until I get the rest of them and then they will go in the dash.
Had to put together an adapter to make an in-line fitting for the trans guage. used a 3/8 tee fitting and the adapter from autometer.
S5000047.jpg

S5000048-1.jpg

then solder on a ground wire since it wont have one otherwise.
S5000049-3.jpg

the water temp sending unit installed
S5000051-1.jpg

the tranny temp adapter installed and feeding into the auxillary cooler, this will give me the temp of the fluid coming out of the radiator.
S5000052-2.jpg

and finally the guages in their temporary spot, so far so good, after a little worrying about the flow in the radiator.

the pics
S5000075-3.jpg

S5000073-6.jpg

S5000074-5.jpg

the console
S5000076-2.jpg

S5000077-2.jpg

S5000078-1.jpg

you can see the other one in the console pic.

So got the thermostat swapped out to a 195 degree and while I was at it figured I would snap a few pics of the batteries and my center console that I pimped out a little.
S5000082-1.jpg

S5000083.jpg

Painted and added a cup holder in the back for the kids.
S5000081.jpg

S5000080.jpg

S5000079.jpg

S5000084.jpg

and here is where I stuck the brake controler, make it easy to reach and adjust.
S5000085-1.jpg

that's about it for today.

the trailer that I pulled that prompted the 496 build.
