1995 Tahoe "build" thread. *new question post 68*

Its not the typical k5 build, but for what he uses it for its just fine. As you've found, IFS has a nice ride:thumbup:

Today was a good day. Got the garage cleared out.

Planned on re building the throttle body so i pulled it off and found this surprise.

Throttle body gasket was broken! Also got the power steering line replaced. Another surprise was that the throttle body had roller bearings instead of bushings! The other strange thing about the TB was the as cast mounting gaskat surface. I tood some time with some 320grit and a flat block of aluminum to true it up.

And here is the plugs i pulled out vs the new delco plugs... Surprise surprise, they were hard to pull out! I pulled them based on the fact that they said "platinum" on them. Really glad i didnt leave them in there longer! Between these stupid plugs and that vacuum leak its a wonder the thing ran so good!

This morning i decided to break off that quick connect heater hose fitting. Actually it broke off as i was tapping the socket on to it! :doah:

Which left me with the remains in the intake.

And after about an hour with a couple different chisels and screw drivers a chipped all the remains out.

So, in chipping out the remains, naturally, i boogered up the threads a little bit. Nothing catostrophic but damaged more than that white pipe thread tape will take care of. So i have two questions, i believe the threads are 1/2npt is that right? I want to get a tap to chase the threads. And second, would that liquid permatex pipe thread sealer or ultra black rtv be better to seal my new fitting in?

It looks like those platinum spark plugs were for aluminum heads and far too long, or maybe your new ones are too short :dunno:

Id run the tap through it, suck some coolant out of the hole, clean it all really good and , then put some Right Stuff on the threads and twist it in. Run a dab around the whole edge and call it good.

Picked up some more goodies today. Got the hose, clamps, nipple, pcv valve, pcv valve hose, and some sealant that should be just right for the nipple.

j/k

Picked up a tap. So i'll tap and clean the hole (gigidy), put some sealant on the nipple and put it in, run the new hose and be all set for that!

I loved the way my 95 burb drove and rode and could fit a small mexican village in it too.
But it too was a dog!

I'm liking the maintenance your pulling here...nothing like "knowing" where your vehicle is maint. wise!

Thanks! Thats the idea. I plan on taking this thing to the beach, the mountains, and the woods. Nothing overly remote but i would like to know that its in acceptable condition to hit the highway for a 5 hour round trip.

The thing did run really good even with the crappy plugs and TB base gasket leak, but im really curious to see how it runs with the proper plugs, new TB base gasket, rebuilt TB, fuel filter, and new o2 sensor. Should be pretty decent. I know it will still be a slug, but i think it will have no trouble keeping up with traffic at least.

it will do that just fine.....maybe want to stay out of OD in the mts, and it'll tow good up to 5K, but over that, find something else.

Got the hose all done and the throttle body on. Now all thats left to do before i consider it road worthy is tye o2 sensor, fuel filter and the driver side spark plugs. After its on the road i will do a laundry list of other maintainance items like trans fluid/filter, diff oils, cap and rotor, plug wires, and so on. Also still need to install tye mirror switch, door handles and give it a good vacuum!

Nipple in.

Hose on. I made it too long so it wouldnt have harsh bends. Still need to get a mounting clamp and secure it away from the exhaust. Also you can see the throttle body is back on.

Meh, its really not that long. I think it will take shape better after it goes through a couple heat cycles. My thoughts are, better to have too much and have the sweeping bends vs having it too short and have it kink.
