1997 Bayliner Capri SS 2350 454ci- Floor done, now to bust out that other thousand…

Made some progress today. Screwed in the 1x3” around the perimeter of the rear section and got it secured down with a few screws and some liquid nails. Then started on the next section of floor. Got perimeter done and all the flooring cleared, but then a surprise visit from pops halted further progress.

AC on the house went down yesterday, and the new mower quit, so I didn’t get a ton done. Today got the seat mounts done under the floor, and secured the final section in the rear. Fiberglass and resin, and the rear will be ready for carpet. Moving up front to replace the small section of the floor in the bow.

Wow I’m kind of behind on updates.

Last week and this week I hit it hard in order to make it to the lake today. Got the fiberglass and resin down, then hit it all with a sander. I cut the hole for the rear ski well door, and decided to skip the front one as we never used it and it’s accessible from the rear door. Finally got the carpet and threw it down with some Henry 663 outdoor carpet glue. For now I only did the main floor, but will eventually go up the storage boxes so it’s all the same color of red.

When I purchased the boat, the rear ski well door was just a massive 2’x4’ sheet of stainless steel. So I found this Maxum locker door that is identical to the factory one, I just ran out of time to redo the carpet on it.

So today we hit the lake, but that wasn’t until a hand full of gremlins poked out while doing a first run precheck. Trailer lights proved to be inop. That was due to some loose crimps. Batteries were not in the best shape, so I threw them on the charger this morning. Also fried something in the battery switch, so that will need replacement.

But after those were handled, it appeared we were ready for the lake.

Once we got everyone loaded up, we decided to go for a short buzz around the corner to a calm cove and cool off with a dip.

Well…..

After about 4 minutes of 50% throttle, the girls yelled that they smelled fumes (Real ones, not Rob). I peeked down at the temp gauge and it was creeping towards 240 degrees. Right as I turned around, they all started yelling “smoke”! I immediately shut the boat down and disconnected the batteries. When I opened the sun deck smoke came rolling out and there were popping noises that sounded like more electrical issues.

Once the smoke cleared, I could see that the noise was rubber burning and popping on the manifold. After a few minutes of inspection, I found a coupler had split. Not sure when, or how, but it was definitely the end of our maiden voyage for the year. Once the engine cooled down and I reconnected the batteries, the boat fired right up and we calmly cruised back to the ramp.

I’ll be replacing the coupler, and hopefully there won’t be any other issues that were caused by the overheating.

Pulled some parts out this morning and decided now would be the best time to toss these on.

My friend that I got the Willoway Green Blazer from also gave me these a few years ago. So this morning I pulled them out to get a plan together

You can barely see it, but I drew some faint circles in the red area in the approximate area where they will exit. I’ll end up with some different exhaust tips as these chrome ones are too small.

Better late than pregnant I suppose. 2 year ago when the boat tried to burn itself down, more damage was done than I realized. All the bellows were scorched and the shift cable was melted and seized.

Picked up a bellow kit and a new shift cable today. Started tearing into the outdrive.

Took the boat out once last year. Something was still blocking water flow, and it overheated within 15 minutes on the water. Same rubber burnt and the shift cable melted again. Back apart everything comes and this time I’m pulling the entire cooling system apart for inspection.
