1999 chevy 2500 getting bad gas milage

i havnt had a chance to get the truck on a nice scanner yet..it will prolly be next week thanks for all the help though
 
well some conclusions after almost 700 mile round trip

going up,trailer and my truck

i got 7 mpg all the way 3 tanks

that left me 1/2 a tank so i burned it up and got 10 mpg then

i refiled and think i got around 14..not real sure cause i went 180 miles on a half tank but i think its around 14

once i get the timing straight hopefully it will be alot better
 
i want it to be better under towing conditions since this truck is used primarly for towing...i would LOVE to get 10 towing
 
I really feel like I'm raining on your parade in this thread but I seriously doubt you'll get 10mpg towing a fullsize truck with that setup...
I just towed my k10 (full bodied still) with some tools and misc. stuff on a 20' wood deck tandem axle trailer and I was getting 8 the whole time.

I've researched this ever since I got this truck and it seems like the best bang for the buck on these vortecs is intake/exhaust and a good tune (give justin at blackbear a call)... the MAF sensors and stuff like throttle body spacers work too but not as great of a bang for your buck...

but your towing with a 454 right??i know plenty of people towing with a 6.0 getting 11
 
You're jumping generations though... BIG difference between the old 5.7 and 7.4L vortecs and the "new" 5.3 and 6.0L...
One of my boss' drives a 2500hd with the 6.0L... peppy little sucker btw... it loves to be wound up and pulls hard 3,000+ where as my 7.4L is only happy in the 2,000-3,000rpm range...

i think its more than possible to get 10mpg out of a 5.7 vortec because my ex g/fs dad was getting 12 pulling a 30 foot camper behind a sub...its definitley possible for a 5.7 but not a 7.4

im still driving around on gas from yesterday i have a 25 gallon tank and a 1/4 tank left and ive driven 300 miles so far on 3/4 of a tank
 
i ordered i distributer today..it was a 150 bucks...hopefully this will fix my problems..after i get theese problems fixed im gonna get it tuned and get the tm system problem fixed...
 
new dist is in..no ses light anymore and it has more power.it actually spun a tire.im going on a trip this weekend (not towing) and ill report back what kind of milage i got.next up is a tune and some aditives
 
Why did you replace the distibutor? What did the gear look like? Where the teeth real thin/worn?
 
the teeth were worn but i didnt want to get it out and it be a cam sensor (in the dist) or the gear...both had to be ordered and was gonna be about the same price to get both as a whole new dist.nothing wrong with new parts
 
Thats cool man! That explains why your timing was off. Hope you get close to the milage your lookinf for!
 
after 800 miles i got around 12.5 to almost 14 in the truck...hopefully after some aditives and tuning i can get another mile or 2 :D
 
averaged the mid 13s over 800 miles of diving...next up is some aditives from 4by4god and then a tune session..hopeing to get to 15
