$200 K5 (454 K5 now) *too much junk in the trunk

Now that I have exhaust it's driveable again. Drove it home about 20 blocks. It was cool out with some rain. Heated up to about 205 and then dropped back down to 197. I think that means the fans kicked on and were working. I will start driving and working on the self tuning for the ProFlo4. I will be reading the manual again and the ProFlo thread tonight. Any advice for tuning? Drive it hard, baby it, drive smooth, drive erratic?

Oh yeah, put a Tom Woods 1350 flanged CV to 1410 yoke driveshaft in to make sure the exhaust would clear.

My suggestion is to avoid fast throttle changes for a little bit and just be smooth with it. Not that you shouldn't give it some throttle, but don't slap it to the floor. Let the 02 read it and the ECM correct the fuel trim.
I don't remember very well what the manual suggests.

Just drive it like normal. If you find a place its not happy, try to hold it there for a bit to let it learn.

Make sure you synchronize your timing between the computer and the timing mark with a timing light. Then lock it down and do all timing changes from the ECU after that.

I have Bilstein 7100 remote reservoir shocks all the way around. Any thoughts on nitrogen pressures to start with? Had the fronts on with the old 350 but the rears are new while I was doing the engine swap. The 0psi I have in the rear right now is not enough! Fronts were craigslist that I rebuilt, can't find my notes on the valving. Rears are from the CK5 classifieds and basically are correct for this application.

Took it out for about an hour. Had a coolant leak, top hose. Just needed the clamps tightened up, first time they have been really warm other than bringing it up to temp to set timing and some cam break in cycles. Ran well and I am happy so far. Its running better than when I started which is good and means its learning.

Coolant temps were decent for a while, 200-215, it crept up on me when I was downtown. I was watching for it and drove on a straighter stretch without stoplights. It came back down to 220 but with some traffic lights and 30mph speed limits it just hovered around 220 or just above. Its 78 out and sunny. I would like to see those numbers lower. Will check coolant level. I am running dual electric fans with the ProFlo4 controlling them, I need to add some indicator lights to see what my fan relays are doing just to be sure of things. I have always liked mechanical fans but wanted to utilize the ProFlo4 capabilities for fan control, Fans are China that came with the radiator. There were few options available during the pandemic so I just picked up the Amazon 4 core radiator that a few guys here are running with ok results.

The under hood temps were pretty high, 190 to 200 on the intake air temp, which is in a standard round air cleaner. May need to go back to a cold air intake like stock but the round one looks cool and has a prefilter wrap which I like for dust. I know @mrk5 is running hood louvers for under hood temp control and I may do the same, its already been on my mind.

I believe I run the same combo (fans, radiator, 454 and pro flo) and I run cooler. At 90+ ambient temps I don’t see over 215 at the head.

Yes, and I stole the idea from @AgDieseler.

what thermostat are you running ? Do you have catalytic converter ? If no I would try 180° tstat. @skunked what tstat are you running ? 195° are emissions control tstat.

I run 180° thermostat, no cat. Driving across NV, 109° outside, 70mph, the coolant temp off the CTS in the intake was 186°. When we pulled off the interstate, the fans would pull the coolant temp down to 180°.

No catalytic converter. With the pause in the project for my broken ankle I cant remember what stat I put in there. Good chance its a 195. I should change it. On other trucks I tried the 180 and didn't get enough heat in the winter, I probably used that logic and picked a 195.

Ran good last night, 10 miles out to the shop just before dark. 199 the whole way at 65mph. Same thing going home at about 11pm. Cool out but still t shirt with doors off weather. I think it should run cooler.

Looking at louvers for the hood. It was hot underneath the hood for sure.
These are the big ones that would do the most good. https://hoodlouvers.com/product-category/xxl-hood-louvers/
These would look sweet on a square hood too. https://hoodlouvers.com/product-category/long-hood-louvers/
Their tech advice is that you cant overdo louvers but you can do not enough. Makes sense to me.

Need to explore the hood louvers pros and cons.
As for running to cool in winter, with electric fans you should be able to get to and maintain thermostat temp.

I skimmed back through the thread but didn’t see it, are your headers coated? I noted a difference in under hood temp with my coated headers being better than my old bare Herman’s.

Cast manifolds, Dorman, for a 1991 BBC with the O2 hole in them.
