2000 Buick Sleeper build - 2nd engine trashed!

Can I build a Buick in here?

Picking up a Regal GS with no engine, but lots of aftermarket parts. Plans are something like this:

-Replacement L67 engine (S/C 3800)
-Ported supercharger and matching intake
-Intercooler
-Undersize supercharger pulley (3.0"?)
-50lb/hr injectors (left over from E85 conversion)
-Fenderwell air intake
-Stainless headers
-custom 3" downpipe and exhaust
-maybe a cam
-Dyno tuning at ZZP
-Stock suspension
-No exterior mods.

The idea is a comfy DD and sleeper. Should be able to get 300WHP.

Is that trans gonna hold up to that?

No and Yes. A stock 4T65-E (HD) lives a short life with torque like that. This is a built transmission with the typical upgrades. Usually like this they last quite a while.

I've been driving a GTP for like 12 years, so I'm not new to the platform. As much as I've liked the 97-03 GP, I think I'm ready to move on. I have no interest in the 04+ (It's no coincidence this car came out when the Grand Am went away - I'm not fooled) and have never liked that era of Monte Carlo. The SSEi seems like a logical progression and the used market is pretty good right now, but I think I'm just getting tired of Pontiac plastic and red backlighting. Now the Regal is very boring, but that makes it a better sleeper. The interior is nicer and the ride is better. Sure, lowering springs look cool and heavy swaybars are nice on a hard corner, but a hard corner is .01% of commuting and seasonal at that. Potholes and seams are there all the time. Maybe I'm growing up? :doah:

Or maybe I'm crazy. There are a million things I might find with a car I can't even test drive - somebody else's project. But it's an adventure and I wouldn't do it if the entry price wasn't cheap. Basically if I added up the (new) price of all the aftermarket parts in the car and divided by 2, that's what I'm paying for the car.

Questions:
1) How do I get it home? Can you get a non-runner on a U-Haul dolly?
2) Anybody local have an engine hoist I can borrow?

Prolly the closest people to you. Craig would let you borrow the engine hoist im sure. We always use the a frame anyways.

Game on :D

Do they make stroker kits for those 3.8s?

Probably, but this won't be an all out build. I'm trying to put my labor into the build to end up with a fast car for the same $ investment as a stock one. I may put a cam in it. It seems like it must have one already, but the owner says the whole valvetrain is stock. The rest of the build doesn't make sense that way, though. He says it was "perfect" for 9 months, but the fact it had chipped pistons tells me to figure it all out for myself. If I'm lucky, I will pull the cam and find it's a ZZP VS or XP. To do high lift is like $900 with cam, lifters, springs and double timing chain, but I might do the VS cam just by replacing the valve springs and a stock replacement timing chain.

Lots of pot holes in Grand Rapids.

If you can yank/winch it up onto the U-haul dolly then it'll move.
Got AAA? Have them tow it home for you.

So somebody built it up a bit, broke it, and are now selling it?

Should. Think they were FWD 4L60E's.

Wait, nothing FWD will have an "L" in it. L=longitudinal, T=transverse. The internals of a 4T60 or 65 are much smaller than the truck transmissions. 4L60 is the same as 700-R4 and the size of the clutches, planetaries, etc. it night and day. The 4T65 had a torque rating of 280ft-lb, which is where the setup of the S/C engine came from - to limit it to that. But the aftermarket has solutions for most of the weak links. ZZP has an 8-second grand prix running 4T65-E with mods. That's close to 1000HP at the crank.

I'm wondering if 2-3 guys could push the car onto the dolly. Or maybe chock the dolly wheels and pull the car up with a strap. Plan to use the Yukon XL to tow. K5 has a winch, but needs about 14" drop hitch to work at normal height. Plus Swampers suck on icy roads.

Got a come along? You could always try and yank it up with one of those.

OK, here's the pics I have:

I'm checking Craigslist for used S/C engines. Looks like I'll have to spend $500-$600. These are full roller engines that run forever, so as long as it's running, I'm not too worried. Anybody in MI know of one for sale?

My other option is to build an engine. The parts car will include two engines. The original engine has 3 or 4 chipped pistons and some kind of head damage I haven't seen yet (heads were at a shop when I was there). The other engine is from some Olds (LSS?) and has bad bearings. I guess I don't know where the heads are from that engine. So I could pull the Olds pistons and put them in the Buick engine and get some used or refurbished heads. I don't know anything about mixing together used parts to make a running engine.

Buddy at work has a dune buggy with a 3800 in it. Started off with a n/a motor then put a s/c top end on it so it is a higher compression s/c 3800 now. He has quite a bit of extra stuff he has collected over the years. When you finally figure out what you need let me know he may be able to help you out.

I have a 98 z34 monte with a blown 3.8 n/a in it, and i am planning on doing the same swap you are. the 98-99 z34's had factory 3.8s, so a gtp swaps right in. And luckily I found a 100k takeout for 400, and a supercharger in good shape for 100. Paid 300 for the car. Just need time now.

Im thinking about just doing a powerlog and crossover for now. its a dd, ive got the camaro to be race car.

Tonight's score:

2-ton hoist, engine stand and load leveler, all for $122.

Cool man I am getting some speed daddy headers for my GTP tired of welding the exhaust manifolds. I will eventually drop the super charger pulley and a custom tune from my buddy.
