2000 GMC SAS: Hydro assist assistance

I've taken apart three of our chevy shop trucks of this era to replace broken wiper fluid motors or cracked tanks and let me tell you what those little motors will shoot a super soaker size stream all the way across the shop! :)

Oh and 5.38's for the win... and Trail Tech Fab makes a sweet rear support plate for 205's. I'm running one.

I looked at their support plate. I was thinking I might just run some plate back from the crossmember and tie into that. Make kind of a skid plate/mount for the support. Check's short this week, probably be another week or two before I get bump stops and a support ordered.

I've got the bumps ordered. Took a shot in the dark and ordered the taller set. Also bought some new rod ends for my drag link. The 42's brought some interesting brake wobble to my attention. I've been driving it almost daily. Still have some cutting to do, but I think they're going to work.

Considering a Little Sahara trip on the 28th, but I think I'm being optimistic on the shipping time and me actually getting my lazy ass out to the shop and cutting the fenders enough/getting the bumps to make everything work.

Small update, some carnage. We were supposed to go to Waynoka, but the driver was sick, so we went to Big Red again.

I had swapped back to the 37's to drive to Little Sahara as I havent done any more cutting for the 42's and they're horrible on the road.

Truck did well. Smashed the driver side of the cab pretty good in one of the creeks, my buddy's samurai broke a u joint at the top of a hillclimb and slid full speed down said hill, which was interesting.

I've developed a new problem. I've cut two of the fender mounting points out and I've broken a fender. Which broke the hood hold down. I dont know if cutting the fender mounts alone, or a combination of cutting and installing the bump stops is causing the problem.
The hood flew up on a dirt road last night, luckily I was going slow enough to keep it from hitting the windshield and stop safely. I guess I'm looking at hood pins or something similar, as the bracket that holds the hood down is riveted to the hood. I dont want to do pins, as they look like they're from autozone, but I'm not wanting to spring for a new hood.

Anyway, a picture from big red, notice the fender above the headlight, and one of the busted fender mount on the core support. Any suggestions?

What about the flush locking hoodpins?

Could sandwich sime thicker steel and weld it to the original mount. Or run essentially an L bracket out of thicker steel and then have it mount at the factory point.

That way the fender is attached via the L sheet metal. Then the L Bolts where the fender did.

Great build!
I've been using these autofab hood pins for a few years now and really like them.

On a side note I have a question for you. Would you mind posting some pics of your front spring mounts? Front and rear of the front springs especially mounting to the frame? I've looked through your whole build and can't seem to find any. I've been collecting parts for my 01 build and would appreciate the help.

I havent done much work on the truck, mainly just driving it.

I welded the hood latch back together and everything was fine for a long time. Checked it every other drive, weld seemed fine. Loaded it on the trailer and headed off down the road and the hood blew open. Tore the back of the hood up pretty good but didnt get the windshield. I've got a ratchet strap in there now, seems to work.

Drove it up to little sahara, about 190 miles, wheeled, drove home. AC compressor finally gave up but everything else did fine.

Went back to mudstock once, got stuck a few times on the 42's. Need more power.

The 42's are almost undrivable. I've got about half a pound of airsoft in each tire to keep the bounce manageable, but it's not enough. May try to find someone that wants to swap for something smaller or find another set of boggers. It would run 75 all day on the boggers with no airsoft and minimal shake.

I missed this post. If you're still interested I'd be more than happy to get those shots for you.

Damn, that is a beast!!!! I frickin love it. I have a few sets of bias 42's. I have a full red solo cup of air soft in each tire. They still suck. But it's a badass tire.

Anyways, rig look killer!

Thanks!

From what I'm seeing is its more a TSL issue than anything. I've read more than one report of "I went from boggers to tsl's and now my truck isnt drivable."

Everything in the front end is new. I still get a hint of death wobble but it's nothing compared to the bounce It's like these tires arent even interco round.

This is one of the main reasons I am afraid to ditch my 39.5X18 Boggers for 42X15 ????. The Boggers drive so well on the street without any airsoft or anything, and my only complaint really is the noise and my mirrors sag and fall off, which isnt a big deal. And I really dont want to step up and then have extra problems I didnt have before I did it.

This thing looks so bitchen on 42's! I hope you leave them on and just buy a trailer or something :D. But I guess if you are driving them down the road a lot, they may get annoying. I have wanted to step up to 42's for a while, but I have recentered 16.5 H1's. If I had 15's, I would see if you would want to trade

Looks good though dude....we need more pics

Any place locally that shaves tires?

No. I've got a buddy fighting a set of MRAP pulloffs on a deuce with a similar problem. Closest place he could find that would do something that big was several hours.

I was surprised how well the boggers did when I got them. I was excited about the TSL's, then major disappointment.

I've got a trailer and haul it on longer trips and I've still got the 37's that I switch back and fourth. It would just be nice to make a 2 hour road trip on the TSL's. About as far as I want to go now is downtown.

I ran 42" biased TSL'S on my truck for a long time balanced with air soft bb's and never had an issue at all.

Weird. I ran a smaller set of TSL's on a K5 years ago and had no problems. This may just be a bad set.

Truck's still getting along just fine. I was tired of the 42's and bought a set of 40" TSL's. Still looking for a good set of boggers, as these TSL's are useless on the road, too.

I took it to the river yesterday and rode around all day. I soon realized that my shocks have reached the end of their life and it's time for an upgrade. Any suggestions? I've been running the ORD Tuff Countries for the last few years and I think the truck is set up well enough that I can buy a good set that will last awhile. I want to keep my mounts the same (lazy) so I wasnt sure if I could get by with the fancy FOA or Fox style shock. Maybe a remote bilstein or something would fit the bill? I do more moderate speed stuff than trail riding anymore, mainly dunes and river stuff, but I still enjoy trail riding. Any input?

I know a lot of people have had good luck with bilsteins. They would probably be the best bang for your buck.

I have Bilstein 5150's and they've been great. Years of wheeling and no leaks.
I think the 7100's are the next step up which is what my friend runs on the front of his blazer (remote reservoir vs mounted reservoir).

Can't go wrong with bilstein.

I ordered a pair of 5125's for now. The ol lady wants to take a vacation soon so I'm going to run these in the front for now and move them to the rear later on and buy some 7100's.

Cool build. I have been searching to find someone doing a sas with a chevy 60. Can you post some pictures of what your exhaust looks like? Just curious how you cleared the hangers and driveline on the passenger side.
